I would not say his problem was just “not being low key”. The real problem was his lack of understanding of the financial world and the absolute necessity of having regulations in place to govern the activities and risk management practices carried out by financial institutions. It was ignorant of him to think that the Ant group could avoid being regulated as a financial institution while they carry out all these financial activities and massively over leverage all under the guise of being a “tech company”. If the Chinese government didn’t step in, this could very well end in another 2008 subprime mortgage like crisis.

@jingkun723 жыл бұрын
My understanding is that Ant was proposing high volume of high interest loans to people without reasonable credit, then sell the debt to banks. In a nutshell, Jack was on the way to reproduce the 2008 financial crisis in China and the Chinese authority didn't want that to happen. That resulted in the confrontational talk on the Bund.
@angryyuan75263 жыл бұрын
True, that's the key point.
@tarotaro69333 жыл бұрын
Yes. The Ant group is trying to act as a middle man between normal people and the bank, they issue loan and mortgage under less restriction rule so that people can borrow money easier then they will bundle those loan and mortgage and sell it to the bank when themselves acting like a guarantor(of course that will great a short to mid term increase in economy) . But in a long them, this will create a huge impact since restriction and rules are much harder to implement and eventually the market will took over by greed and 2008 mortgage crisis all over again. I think the CCP did a good job shutting down this IPO and reevaluate ant group.
@jollykuo19813 жыл бұрын
I reckon this is a part of the reasons and phenomenons, but it deeply represents that the group of Xi is not holding the same ideology with capitalism group. So government suppressed it. BTW, according to some of the analysis, the suppression of Ant Group was totally authorized by Xi.

For China central gov, risk control is very critical. developing too fast may risk whole country though may be good for some industry or companies. So the perspective is different. Ma may not be wrong for Ant group or Alibaba perspective, but he is not in charge of whole country and people. So the overall direction controlled by China Gov is to make sure whole country is developing in stable and sustainable way. The way is new for China, no example, no map or guild. So every step of China move is important, failure will cause huge impact on people. So I personally support the cautious review and action plan done by China gov for this IPO stopping event. Looking at the result is more important than listen what the media say. Just look at the overall development result of China in past 20-30 years, China Gov did right thing for the country and people. So looking forward, I think they will keep the same way to move on.

I feel like you guys are doing a valiant job and a noble one but you guys are (no offense) pissing in the wind. 1) These Fake News outlets are so rabid and rampant. BBC is guaranteed to publish at least one put down article on china a day. The latest today is Sudworth accusing China of propoganda with their piece on his non visit to the garment factory in Xinjiang. This Jack Ma issue is now old fake news. Yesterday the issue was Huawei and their "Uighur alert" App, Huawei of course is so rubbish at PR we have yet to hear a response. There was also the disingenuous interpretation of SinoVac's vaccine numbers claiming a lower efficiency of under 50% without providing the context. sinovac at least responded but alas it is insufficiently widely reported. How are you guys going to keep up with the pace these fakeNews groups can manage? even watching this report, Epoch Times popped up bc KZbin is shamelessly still taking its money despite the blowback during the Capitol Riots and the obvious active hand Epoch Times (funded by the same US govt) is playing on US domestic stability with its Fake news on "The Steal". 2) The numbers you guys get in terms of hits pale in comparison to some charlatans like John Oliver or that amateur girl wandering an empty alley way in Xinjiang for Vox and claiming all the Uighurs have gone missing. They hit 6-8m easy. Unless you guys can engage some of the more popular Vblogs like Joe Rogan or Ben shapiro to at least have a healthy debate on say 'Fake news' (as a way in to discussing Fake news on china as well), you are not making a dent. 3) The other thing is most of the people who tune in to your channels are probably people who are already 'sympathetic'. Unless you can attack the Mainstream media (eventually) by perhaps first exposing fake (or at least extremely poorly corroborated) news...its a slog up a very steep hill. Thanking you for your efforts otherwise all the same. Just being frank.

The other thing is I think people like Daniel need to be very careful how close he gets to CGTN (Great trip to Tibet with them but it could be ammunition used against him). Cyrus has good credentials bc he is a registered Republican but some other posters with a more 'socialist' heavy ban will not play to a wider audience in the US at least. And that's part of the problem bc everyone is searching for news they want to hear. YOu end up with hermetically sealed echo chambers. How you can engage the other side and get them to listen to your side of the story is the biggest challenge.

It has nothing to do with the speech. Jack Ma knew he would not get the approval of the IPO, his speech clearly showed his frustration. The over-leverage (100 times !!!) nature and high interest to loaners with low repayment capabilities of Ant Group is taking huge profit now and leaving huge debts to the people in the future. This will harm physical economy of China. Who wants to put his money into starting a tech company when he would just put his money into this kind of high return fintech companies and get bigger profit? It’s exactly this kind of over-leverage by tiers of financial derivatives that led to the economy crisis in the US in 2008. The same thing happened to Iceland about 10-15 years ago, when the Icelanders no longer do fishing, which was their major source of income and went all out in high profit financial products. Many got rich, until the bubble burst. The Chinese government believes the financial sector should the support for physical economy, it should not hijack money from physical economy. Capitalism knows no social welfare, it’s aim is squarely at maximize profit. Socialism is needed to balance economic dynamics and social welfare. In the US, Capitalists control the government. In China, the government controls the Capitalists.

Thank you for this video Cyrus! You are spot on with the mention of 低调, but on the other side of the coin , people would say that it is "suppression" For these people, I feel sorry for them that they "don't get it" There are many permutations for 低调, and one of them is simply humility and "knowing one's place" and these are nothing to do with "suppression" or "oppression". Thanks to your video, I now fully understand what happened to Jack Ma, and I was also concerned before. I can understand that through one's rise, like Ma's, one can get carried away at times if one does not constantly be alert to his own "volume" of how "loud one is speaking". There's also a Chinese saying 饭可以乱吃,话不可以乱讲, which translates to "You can eat whatever you want, but you cannot simply say whatever you want" again, not against "freedom of speech - and even this has its limits as we as seen" it is about you can eat what you want as it only affects you if you get food poisoning but if you say whatever you want, it affects others.

There is also another side of the situation. Ant Group received loans from the Central Bank at a 4% interest rate and lent it up to 14% interest to the users of the system. Moreover, Ant Group was not regulated by financial rules but acted as a digital platform. Alibaba as well as Ant Group has important investment from Goldman Sachs since longtime ago. Now that foreign financial entities would invest in China keeping 100% of their investment its very important that all rules are clear and not abusive with the Chinese consumers. Great job! Cyrus, in elaborating the often misunderstood cultural undercurrent to current affairs. I'm amazed at the level of financial prudence and due diligence the Chinese financial regulatory authorities have taken to step in and halt the ANT Group IPO- its high leverage, high interest rate, unregulated high risk massive consumer lending could easily spiral out of control if left unchecked, much like a financial Ponzi scheme or tsunami bigger than the 2008 US financial crisis. In China, the segregation of good state governance and private business ensures capital (both capital flow and capitalist) works for the people, but not people exploited by the capitalist who funded the politicians. No matter how or who you voted for, the vicious cycle continues.

Some more fact is the major shareholders of Alibaba is Softbank, so many Chinese said Alibaba is a foreign company. As well as the Ant group after listed, the major shareholder will be foreign funds. Also, Jack Ma was fully aware that Government is preparing to change the financial policy on personal loans. But he insisted to list the Ant Group with high IPO Price before the policy is effective. The stock price will sharp drop after the market realized this new policy and all the small investors will be the victims. Media reported with a photo that Jack Ma have shown up in a funeral of his friend 5 days ago but keep low profile.

Cyrus, you are indeed a learned professional, especially in being well versed on the Chinese culture. An excellent presentation, and hopefully Jack Ma will surface again and play his part, not based on the American ideology of only making individual rich and powerful and leaving the majority behind. I personally think that the entire world, especially the developing nations should adopt that ideology. In eradicating absolute poverty will there be peace, progress and development.

@tomchan64803 жыл бұрын
There was another opinion about the Ant Group. The Ant Group was promoting a spending habit among the young generation which contradicts traditional Chinese saving ideology. We always teach young people to save for future uses. but according to operation of Ant Group, they encourage people to spend more than they earn. Then, Ant Group provides different credit services for these people to get one credit account to cover the debt from the other, as a result, the total debt would be unmanageable. This would affect millions of young fellow in China, so that CCP had to do something that put the situation under control. I learnt this from a Taiwan analyst.

Cyrus makes really important points here, about the differences between Chinese Communist thinking and Capitalist ideas. The biggest being the focus differences, about the individual in Capitalism and the primary focus on the Social in Communism. Socialism, on the other hand, has always been about a transitional stage from Capitalism on the way out, and then through Socialism building Communism. Hence, Socialism has always been a mixed economy, between the two opposing systems. And that has been the case in all Socialist Countries and their economies. I would say that being low key is not just a Chinese trait but also a Socialist one. I personally have experienced these differences, as I have lived in both systems, all my life, of 62 years. US people often don't understand these differences, claiming that China is a Socialist Country with a Capitalist Economy. That's view is wrong, and it's driven by a set of beliefs, that only Capitalism can be successful in economic matters, where the individual desire for wealth drives the economic wheel, and not social based economy making the individual wealthier. But that's certainly not the case, as we have seen in the west. In that order, individuals have rarely shared much wealth with society, but used wealth for creation of their own power. Also, individual based economies have created many problems, eg. crime, very unequal distribution of wealth, suppressing wage growth, polluting the environment since conception, and producing uneven economies, not where growth is most needed but where the largest immediate profit is, etc. Perhaps the largest disruption of Capitalist economies has been on the social level, displacing large populations and creating entranged social classes, of wealth possession and labour possession. And that's the point, which western governments have tried to balance, mainly from fear of revolution. So, today we have western governments constantly creating Socialist type reforms in their societies, while still insisting on a Capitalist type of economy. That's dispite the fact that it's that type of economy, which produces all these social problems, in the first place. So, today we also have people in the west, who are producing more socially based economic reforms, where the possession of wealth is being directed towards social ownership, eg. small investors own now the majority of shares in many companies, talk for a Living Wage and cashless Society, etc. But we are not there yet. But that's what the Socialist path towards Communism suggests. And noone will be able to stop that roll, as Capitalism is just not coping well in the modern World. And for all of the above, we have China's lead, to thank for. Also, we must not forget the progress the Soviet Union and European Socialism has made. And that includes all the mistakes Socialism has made. Without mistakes and learning from them, we have nothing. But first, we need to get honest about the history. Stop the senseless propaganda, still coming out of entranged Capitalism circles. It's not going to make much difference in the end, but it's only slowing us down. Socialism is the next stage for our World, because it makes sense, and not because we are brainwashed by Marx and Lenin.

The issue the Chinese Government takes with Jack Ma is that Ant Group wants to add banking business, aka, lending and wealth management, to its payment business, and for that, Ant needs to comply with domestic banking regulations and BASEL III under which Ant needs to have own capital $10 for $100 (risk-rated) loan it extends. Ant doesn't have the money but plans to get its funding from the government-owned banks, and this does not sit well with the Chinese government because government banks would end up with bad debts if Ant defaults, which could easily happen if a recession hit or Ant has loose lending criteria. Without sufficient self capital, the government would like to see Ant doing what does best, processing payments. If ant wants to be a bank, it needs to be regulated as a bank, it is a very reasonable request from any government, but a good opportunity to exploit for anti-China propaganda news outlets such as Epoch Times.

One little detail that I have to mention about this incident happened to Jack Ma, which is the loan system called “Hua Bei”. Quite a few average Chinese people, especially the parents like in their 40s and 50s, they pointed out that they don’t want their kids to have such “Hua bei” system to borrow money. Even though by doing so is really gonna stimulate the growth of economy, they don’t want their kids to have a huge debt when they just graduate from the college in the future. Saving is the tradition of Chinese culture, not splurging! Hence, Jack Ma wanna push the “Hua bei” in order to expand his business, but there is not a good feedback in the society instead!

There is also talk about the new services that Ant Financial is about to provide with their IPO. These product that they will be providing is the same as what has destabalised not only the USA Market but also the world market during the Fanny Mac and Lehman Brothers scandal back in 2008. If this is the truth, then yes I believe that the Chinese authorities has a social obligation to stop this service because it is not only detrimental to the Chinese economy but will also affect the world economy too.
