I get that for Americans, many of whom may find European geography confusing, the simple division between Western and Eastern Europe is very much convenient. People that live in Europe then logically understand it in much smaller chunks: Benelux, British Isles, Nordic countries, Central Europe, Baltic states, the Balkans, and so on and so forth. But what saddens me personally about the Eastern/Western terminology is that it is accepting the old Soviet narrative, where we understood that the world was divided into distinct spheres of influence and all of Eastern Europe pretty much belonged to USSR whether it wanted or not. And when a country tried to escape "Eastern Europe" (that is, communism) and opted for freedom, Soviets came to crush the uprising with their tanks.

@Harold Potsdamer Who taught you such silly things, after 1919 there was only 25% share of germans in Olomouc. It is also not a good example, it was a fortress city, so it´s expansion was blocked by walls. This meant the population inside was more stable, without influx from villages around, with high cost housing affordable for high ranking officials. Since it was center of region, there were bureacracy and military employees, which naturaly were austrians. After walls were opened and surrounding towns and villages were integrated into Olomouc, share of germans dropped to the 25%. The reason to kick germans out was to protect them, the pent up anger would lead to civil war. It was in olomouc where germans executed few tens of resistance members, several days before Soviets came. Second reason is they got what they wanted by electing Henlein - to live in germany, it just so happened to fullfil in another way.

@Harold Potsdamer It is hardly a trick, city walls became obsolete, were removed and town expanded and connected to other settlement around. Large part of citizens decided to become czechs after 1918 as well. It is not like there were 2 separate camps of czechs and germans, they married each other freely, and mostly knew both languages to a native speaker level.

Many people actually have the same help. But do you know what helps? Heat. If you eat it fried or in some warm sandwich, tortilla, on pizza etc., it gets much better. There is actually a restaurant that makes ice cream, cakes and things like that out of that cheese.

*Just a heads up.* The exchange office chain at 6:02 constantly breaks the law and gives bad rates. Avoid it if you don't wanna get ripped off. You have by law three hours to get your money back if you fall for a bad rate, but these offices refuse to follow it and even steal receipts and such. So avoid these ones if you wanna exchange money.

As someone who has lived his whole life in the very center of Old town in Prague, i feel like it's hard to view Prague as an especially good place anymore. There's a whole "industry" built around robbing off tourists, be it exchanges, cabs, nightclubs, brothels, thaimassages, souvenir shops, idiotic beerbikes, segways/scooters/choppers, fake historical cars, all owned by russian mafias. Prague used to be a beautiful place to grow up in, in the 90's. Now, thanks to a Zimbabwe-like level of corruption it's a disneyland for drunk tourists screaming like apes 24/7. I moved out of my beloved flat because it was impossible to sleep anymore. I don't even mention Airbnb's where touristish animal-like screams at night can drive people insane, or on the border of legal boundaries... None of this was going on in the past. Yes there were different problems, but life in Prague was a bliss. Beautiful architecture, beautiful girls, good food, humane behavior. Nowadays behavior of people is very, very calculated. Tourist = money, that's all. If you visit Prague just please be respectful and do yourself a favor and stay away from places that look like tourist traps, because those only support further spiraling out of control etc. I could talk about it for ages but you get the point. Btw no I'm not a complaining 70year old dude, i'm really young, just very sad of how Prague has turned out, thanks to greedy politicians and some other people.

Hey, thanks for this video! 1. I think, we (Czech) are very proud that we can call our country as "Hearth of Europe" coz´ we learn in school this: Czech republic is in Central Europe. 2. Thanks! A lot of Czech have smile on their faces but I think ther is a lot of people which is not happy and don´t smile in public. and about some words to know: hello - ahoj good morning - dobrý den (We use hello when we are with friends but when we don´t know each other we use good morning/afternoon) Please, beer and thank you (thanks) is right :) but: good bye - na shledanou bye - čau/ahoj (this is the same rule as up. We used bye when we are with friends and good bye when we are with strangers/ in job with bosses etc.) 3. We love beer! We have a big range of this "fluid bread", Pilsner Urqel is one of the best. The earliest preserved records of beer in Bohemia are from the 10th century AD! So we are beer nation :D 4. I love our food! For example pork, dumplings and sauerkraut; sirloin sauce with dumplings; chicken cutlet with potatoes (hmm, delicious with lemon! Or lot of Czech people eat cutlet with potato salad). We eat sweet meat to. For example dumplings stuffed with fruit (apples, blueberries, plums, blackberries, strawberries... our traditional fruit). When it is time for dessert, our grandmothers bake a pie, cake or strudel. This sweet food is stuffed with fruits, jam, poppy seeds, cottage cheese, chocolate... And there is so many sizes! From little like coin to one big pan (to the oven) So, why don´t love Czech kitchen? :3 5. And it isn´t only this city. In every Czech city older than 100 years you can find a lot of beautiful buildings, statues etc. I am really proud of our building history. 6. Oh, OK :D I write this coment when I watch this video. (And every point I write before I see the next :D) Yes, Český Krumlov is really nice and probably the most visited city in our little country. 7. I can´t disagree :) 8. Oh yes, we are also crazy ;) But we don´t have mummy in every house, only in some museums and old catacombs. 9. We have really hard language. So many diacritics BUT we have only three difrences : háček, čárka a tečka (hook, comma and dot, ˇ ´ and . (sorry, we don´t have symbol in keyboard for dot under letter :D)) we don´t have apostrophe, umlaut, tilde or breve. But there are really lot of rules and we usually learn it nine years! (and after this time we don´t know all of them) And funny fact: when we read written Slovak and Polish, we understand it! There is lot of meme about it :D 10. Please, do not judge us for socks in sandals, not all wear it (and like it). It´s our style and it is really comfort (hey, you don´t have squeezing after wearing socks in sandals. But it is not nice, that´s true.) And for weather in Czech republic: in summer, there is usually 35 - 40 °C. In winter we sometimes have snow, but not in big cities like Prag or Brno. And about cold: now, in December, there is something between -10 and +5 °C :/ and it is windy. I need snow! Thank you again for the video about our little state and I hope they didn't mind my comment on every point :) (Oh, and sorry for my English, I don´t use it a lot.)

the "eastern europe thing" is an old wound from back in the day, when we were occupied by soviet army and were forced into eastern block. It´s more like a thing of national pride, but it also fits geographicaly. And the prices for beer ? You really wouldn´t meet any czechs at the pubs at the most tourist frequent places. Just 2 streets from Venceslav´s Square the beer can be for the half price. Prague sure is beautiful, but every major city has the same stuff (castle, bridges, historical towers, squares ect) without crowds of tourists, I strongly recomend visiting something else.
