From 1335 to 1558, the castle was the seat of the Zajíc family from Hazmburk. Later, like other castles, it lost its significance and was abandoned. It gradually abandoned and only in the time of Romanticism did it become the subject of interest of Czech romantics such as Karel Hynek Mácha or Svatopluk Čech. In written sources, the name of the castle is also mentioned as Házmburk, sometimes also as Zaječí hrad, Zajícův hrad, or in older sources Hanžburek.
