1998年、ディアンジェロがニューオーリンズで毎年開催されている「Essence Festival (エッセンス・フェスティバル)」に出演する際に、そのリハーサル音源をフィラデルフィア拠点の「The Shibe Park Vaults」がbandcampにて配信した貴重なレコーディング音源計8曲を紹介したい。
リハーサルの日時は不明だが、彼らのエッセンス・フェスティバルでのライブは、1998 年 7 月 2 日に行われた。（ D'Angelo LIVE At Essence Festival, July 2, 1998 New Orleans Superdome ）
エッセンス・フェスティバルは、40年以上の歴史を誇るアフリカ系アメリカ人の女性向けライフスタイル雑誌「Essence」が主催する、世界最大規模のブラック・ミュージックの祭典。
毎年7月の独立記念日の週、ニューオーリンズのメルセデスベンツ・スーパードームで開催されるビッグイベントで、今までに20回以上開催されている。
ステージは、大きなメインステージが一つと、スーパーラウンジと呼ばれるライブハウスぐらいのキャパの小さなスペースが4つあり、スーパーラウンジは「Art of Hip-Hop Superlounge」「Hot Right Now Superlounge」「Soul of R&B Superlounge」「Now Playing Superlounge」と、ブラックミュージックの中でもジャンル毎に分かれている。
過去、スティーヴィ・ワンダー、プリンス、ビヨンセ、ジャネット・ジャクソン、アレサ・フランクリン、チャカ・カーン、アリシア・キーズ、エリカ・バドゥ、メアリー・J.ブライジ、ルーサー・ヴァンドロス、ティーナ・マリー、アル・グリーン、パティ・ラベルなど、ブラックミュージックのビッグ・スターが出演している。

A good bit of the album probably happened around 98. Voodoo dropped January 2000. Devil's Pie was also circulating around then; it was featured in the movie "Belly", which was released in November 98

Yes, Charlie Hunter talks about that in an interview I watched recently - most of the Voodoo sessions were tracked around 98. They were already performing a bunch those tracks with the Soultronics on tour. 🔥

D at prince level and james brown level. One of the greats. Shout out to the sound engineers on this one. Superb. Tall a$$ white boy paladino in the back there. Also one of the greatest bassists of all time. Anthony Hamiltons unmistakable vintage soulful tone on back ups too. D’s vocals are pure butter. Velvet. Silk. Fine music right here. The horn phrases how they end up on that minor 6th on ‘me and those dreamin eyes’ though

日本の投稿者ですか？ ディープな黒人ミュージックの投稿ありがとうございます アメリカの黒人音楽史におけるD'angelo の立ち位置はかなり独特だと思います ネオソウルは元々当時流行していたR&Bに反発しての音楽性だったと何かの記事で見た記憶があります。 D'angelo以外にネオソウルのアーティストはいますが、彼のサウンドに関してアフリカンの要素に加えてゴスペルやVoodooの宗教感が強く出ているように感じるのは、 彼の聖歌隊での経験と、アフリカ人種としての強いアイデンティティのためだと思います。
