Gnome mindflayers are already (kinda) a thing, Mozgriken ceremorphs were the closest thing mindflayers could make according to the lore, because small humanoids couldn't handle the process of implanting a larvae inside them. They even have a cool picture, stat block, and a bit of lore describing how they're made in Dragon magazine 255

Please give us Spelljammer nothing has ever got me quite as excited about D&D as spelljammer the idea that you could at any point basically pick your groundling party up out of their Tolkienesque world and into what is almost Treasure Planet and Adventure across the Multiverse of other settings is one of the coolest ideas in the history of RPGs i hope you guys include a little bit of a retro 80s vibe to the setting by tossing in some Krull / Masters of the Universe-esque elements but that's just me.

It's a tiny humanoid shaped Fey creature native to the Chultan Peninsula. They inhabit the thick, sparsely populated jungles. As such, they are naturally curious about humanoids that happen to pass their tiny hovels. They will follow a humanoid they take a liking to. (determined randomly) If they aren't caught by the characters, they will take a souvenir from that character. This is typically something of little value. Being good natured and never wishing to take without also giving, they will replace that item with a small gemstone or trinket. Despite not speaking, I've always been able to use them to great effect as comic relief. Little bright spots in an otherwise dangerous adventure.
