My dad taught me all about the corporate world, and his big advice is, "If they have you attend a company picnic, or other activity that's allegedly not on the clock, guess what? You're still at work. Do not drink, do not fraternize, just keep your mouth shut and smile. Do not discuss politics, religion, or how much you make. Do not fish off the company pier." When you are on the clock, his advice is the advice my grandpa gave him: "Keep your mouth shut and do your job description. If you do those two things, you are already ahead of 90% of your co-workers for promotion." Joke's on them; I run my own business, and love my job. Still really good advice, though.

Jerk move to promote evil campaign then force everyone to be good for a DMPC (especially when they follow a chaotic evil god, regardless of retcon). While the story of redeeming villains through making them a heroic party has potential, it shouldn't be sprung out of nowhere and shouldn't excuse a canon villain.

As soon as the "cool heroic voice" or whatever was encouraging people to care for the wounded I knew something was up. Very odd thing to do in a campaign where everyone is actively trying to be as evil as possible

"I am going to run an Evil campaign" followed by shackling them with a Paladin handler, just reminds me of "The Gamers: Dorkness Rising" (Great D&D film, give it a watch!). Lodge (the DM in the film) learned his lesson, where as the DM in this story did not. The game OP and the players got was not the game they agreed to play.
@TyRaff2 ай бұрын
That had so many great moment, but one of my favorites had to be when the paladin said, "look, I think I see an evil doer over there," and just let the party do their thing. That was great character development for Lodge as the DM.
@ZedRen-s8g2 ай бұрын
@@TyRaff The line Sir Osric says is "My what rustic yet charming architecture over there. I will inspect it further." Which I quote when a player character wonders from the main group for whatever reason. Lodge did so, because he is taking Joanna's advice to ease up on being so strict on the players. It's why the players, with the exception of Cass, start coming around to the game and roleplaying more. It does take Lodge a bit to come around, but he learns by the end that by focusing on the story he wants to tell the players fight him more. If he eases up, and tell the story collaboratively with his players, they all get to tell and enjoy the game much more.

I’ve played cards at a friends workplace. It was actually a pizza place and we’d eat pizza and play cards for a few hours after everyone was off work. Never had any issues, though. Looking back I’m surprised we never got in trouble even if his boss played with us.
@LucifronzАй бұрын
Don't be friends, or even overly friendly, with your boss. That should be the real lesson... but honestly, there's so much in here that's worth criticizing. A weirdo proposing to basically a complete stranger (even if you were dating the whole time, you barely know them, take a few years first, you nut). A DM that's overly-controlling and seemed to just get bored of the idea of an evil campaign and railroaded everyone into being good guys when they could have just... you know... had them make good or redeemed characters instead and went with that. Out of all of it, though, the thing that bothered me most was the bastardization of an established deity in D&D lore. Why? Why even do it? There are other gods who would have fit way better. Elistraee, most obviously.
@SoulSoundMuisc8 күн бұрын
I saw red flags the moment they announced an Eeeevil Game. Those *rarely* last. I'm very long in the tooth and gray of the beard and have had *one* successful long term 'Evil Party' game. One. In a little more than three decades. How did I manage it? I picked a player who I knew could handle being in charge. That player and I talked out of game. They made a Lawful Evil Anti-Paladin. I started them at Level 4 (WITH all of the associated wealth and let them go ham buying what they wanted: magic armor, magic sword, you name it, I didn't care). The rest of the characters started at Level 1. SO! When, as *always* happens in that kind of game, you get the Saboteur Character (M. Hobo, Klepto, Power Tripper, guy who wants to try to poison the well or start a "indentured" servant market in an area where that will not only be noticed but is highly illegal, you get the idea) acting out and trying to do petty evils, guess what? The Anti-Paladin disabled them, did terrible things to them, and *completely* cowed the party with their cruelty. "I have given you the carrot. This is the stick. You will ONLY get the stick until you can prove to me you are worthy of the carrot." Another character tried the same thing and ended up skewered on a pike at a crossroads. See, the Anti-Paladin (unlike most of the rest of the characters) had *goals* and a *vision* that they wanted to see come to fruition. They were the glue that kept the entire party in check. I didn't *need* a DMPC to do that, the Anti-Paladin did that. It was a little rough at first, with some bumhurt that the Anti-Paladin started off at a higher level. I just asked them, "Do you get upset when it's an NPC telling you where to go, what to do, how to do it, how fast to get there? No. Anti-Paladin is your boss." After about session 3, things smoothed out very nicely and everyone found their equilibrium and understood the boundaries and what the Anti-Paladin would let slide. Very successful game. Every other Evil Party game has devolved into infighting, and TPKs when the consequences of doing things that are bad but don't make sense come crashing down on the PCs. Shocker right? They usually don't last past session 3. If you're not willing to pull a PC aside, have The Boss Character talk with them, and set them in stone? Don't bother, do it as a one-shot; it's a waste of time and effort unless you *like* watching your players turn into misbehaving children running around with matches and scissors through a puppy mill.

Hmm, I’ve been thinking of running a small game of the dragons of stormwreck isle with a few coworkers who want to try DnD, now I’m wondering if I should…
@lootgoblinmarketplace8 ай бұрын
Is it on-site and can anyone in the group fire someone else in the group? Doing at work can be rough because you never know who finds something offensive that is pretty normal in D&D and now suddenly it has become a bit of a problem. If this was handled offsite and you have time to talk it out though I don’t see it turning into anything. I think the main concern here is that had it at work with a manger that kind of seemed like someone who was a pretty picky manager. So once it made the manager look bad, things kind of got ugly because they stopped being a friend and a DM and went straight into “I’m your boss” mode. Also Steve seemed like a pretty disagreeable person at D&D but this stubbornness for a game turned into a reflection of his performance at his job… I’d hate to be held to a workplace standard for what is a fun hobby.

Also I would definitely recommend everyone going over some ground rules as for what is and isn’t comfortable and allowed behavior at the table, the same way you would with any new group. Especially because you guys all work together I would personally say no Inter party romance or pvp

@@lootgoblinmarketplace The plan is for it to be off-site, and all of the players (and myself) are Ed-Techs at the school I work at. But yeah, my main worry now is just possible expectations going in and what is acceptable for everyone. I hadn’t thought about that before, but I’ll definitely have to have a conversation about that with everyone.

Manager is in charge and overly uses expertise to people that just want to have fun, with some being totally selfish, a slight romance that's self absorbed and cringe, fighting, firing and egos flaring. Congratulations you achieved the bad half of every d & d campaign over time, and continuous work thing. The problem here was that you can't mix anything and work if there's a question of "do I have to commit to this".

Shouldn't a work group DnD group always be a goody two shows play through to keep things from triggering someone? Like, there's a lot that can happen in an evil playthrough, and much of it will send someone to HR. We got someone fired for telling a coworker he burnt a fetus with his ex-wife, that's evil, but not nearly as evil as an evil campaign can, and will, get. You should only agree to an evil campaign with people who you don't work with and know you well enough to understand you're being evil for the sake of the campaign.
@kentyannayon374111 күн бұрын
And to explain, none of us thought this guy was all there, he couldn't even read binary indications after repeat coaching. Either he made it up, or wasn't competent enough to understand what he'd done or what he was saying. However, he had become such a problem that everyone wanted him sent back to a position where he didn't interact with anyone. That meant he needed to find work elsewhere.
