Once upon a time in the AD&D days I came up with this maddening idea of writing my own spellbook. A spellbook for my Wizard. All the spells I knew, components, ranges, durations descriptions etc. 1, So I knew where my spells were to reference. 2, As a exercise to remember spells better when I GMed
@aLuckyMuse2 жыл бұрын
I love that! I decided to keep things simple for myself and just use a phone app for quick lookups for extra spell information. I used to use cards, but there's nothing faster then typing with an auto fill search engine at your finger tips. But I love the idea of an immersive spellbook, I also love the idea of having a bit of fun casting spells by describing the look and feel of them being cast into the battle field, especially if it's your characters first time using it.

@aLuckyMuse Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I definitely spell by sound and if it "looks right" a lot, and if I'm taking fast notes good spelling and grammar are out the window. If it's for personal use, I learned in life if I can read and understand it that's all that matters but if it's not for personal use, type it up and use spellcheck! 😂

You have inspired me to keep my own character journal. Game has never been a sure thing for me, all the games I've been in have never been finished except for THE INCIDENT so I've never had a good reason to make one before. You gained a subscriber tonight. :) Can't wait to see more from you.

Wow! I'm happy to inspire. 😊 When I put this little project up I had no idea that so many people would resonate with it. I wish you luck with your own journal. Honestly, even if some journeys end sooner than we'd like, it's nice to have mementos of those times shared I think. I'm hoping that's what this journal will be for me. Plus it can perhaps help build new character's backstories lol

I certainly hope so! I think sometimes it can be hard to take the plunge into creative or organizational endeavors like this and it's not for everyone. Since I'm an artist, one of my plans is to sketch all the player characters faces and then have those players sign underneath the drawing in their characters name, high school yearbook style. It's all about creating good memories!

Radiant soul can be such a godsend haha. I've been using it a lot lately outside of combat as flight is a very useful utility in the underdark! Last session an NPC fell down into a hole and was badly wounded, I was able to fly down and rescue her, then our Paladin healed her up.

I'm only a minute in. I'm happy this is based off of Ginny Di's video. In light of the whole WotC fiasco... The idea of custom made character sheets from scratch very much appeals to me, as I leave D&D Beyond behind me. I also went in a bit of a different direction. Curious to see your process.

Yes, I've made update videos every year on how I've refined my journal to be more user friendly since it's all about how I use it rather then sticking to a predefined method. Like tailoring your own clothes to fit just right for your needs. ☺
@lukeholbrook204 Жыл бұрын
Really enjoyed this and your ideas for what to include and how to arrange it. Like you, I like using pencil, particularly for anything that I update only occasionally. I do use clear plastic sheet protectors, and I use wet erase markers to write things that are updated frequently, like hit points or checking off spell slots. Wet erase doesn’t rub off as easily as dry erase, so it will stay legible even if other things rub against it. I just dampen a little bit of a paper towel at the beginning of the session so I can erase the marker as needed.
@aLuckyMuse Жыл бұрын
I've been thinking about incorporating a cut piece of plastic to do some dry or wet erase for things like HP where the paper really wears down fast. But I've also been thinking about testing out a digital tablet character journal too, now that I have an ipad with an apple pencil, just to see what can be learned.

Online groups are a good way to start. There are people that post on Reddit subs looking for groups that can meet on discord etc. If you want to meet in person, if you have a local gameshop you should try talking to the owner and seeing if there are any organized shop games or local groups you could try to join. Lastly, you could always make a flyer and pin it to any community bulletin boards that your local library or grocery store may have.

Interesting that you mentioned your deity as "The Everlight" which given you're playing 5e tells me your probably playing in Matt Mercer's custom setting As Sarenrae is present in no other campaign setting for 5e. It is also unlikely that this is a fully home brew world as only former Pathfinder players are likely to include Sarenrae in their campaign, and almost nobody who plays Pathfinder refers to her as "The Everlight". Just something I noticed that my OCD demanded I mention.
@aLuckyMuse Жыл бұрын
We are playing in a Critical Role world setting yes. Most of my table got involved in watching Vox Machina in the early days and they are big fans. I'm not sure I've had any play time in a purely vanilla D&D world setting, its always been at least a slightly homebrew world.

@aLuckyMuse ah cool! Not making any judgements I just found it very interesting when I heard it.
