I adore Volo so much, when I first discovered that he was just a low level wizard who was kinda a hack writer I knew my new favorite person lol

We love Volo in this house. I always play him as being well informed and knowing what he's talking about, but still very much trouble prone and getting in over his head and not realizing such things until it's too late. And while yes, he is infamous for embellishment and flair for the dramatic and that leads him into getting into the trouble he doesn't realize quite so well, I do in fact play him as having the means to get out of trouble and prove at the end of the day that despite his embellishments, his writing is completely factual, if infuriating to the people who help him with it and the people whose dirt is spilled by it. But he means well, rewards well as far as he believes, and his works do help, if for no other reason than Elminster's involvement in the process.

I used volo in water deep dragon heist because he appears as a major character. He offers to pay them money to find his friend but instead gives them a Dilapidated bar, and while they loved the bar, and the NPC's that surrounded it, they never quite forgave volo for it.

Haven't used Volo but rather npcs of mine that I came up with who are relatives of Volo nicknamed the "Brothers Geddarm" two brothers who aren't as skilled adventurers as their famed relative but try there to create situations where they can be seen as heroes and sell the proceeds. From false drow and orc raids to fumbling in their own traps or getting caught by unsavory monsters.
