Owlbears are my favorite D&D-original creature! They're so fearsome, yet so cute! Especially the Snowy Owlbears.

my Party's first encounter with an Owlbear was in a magical forest corrupted by a Green hag. they'll probably meet a Kenku Ranger that rides one as an animal companion in a future adventure.

@@CL30 I think it went great, the Owlbear took some bites out of the barbarion before he and everyone else started whacking it with spells and attacks (while my Sister hadn't joined in, there were still six players and they brought G'nerpf the Goblin Fighter) either the Barbarion or Bard skinned the creature for its hide (I mentioned that Owlbear hide is highly valuable for it's uses in coats) and I am definitely certain the Barbarian cooked some of the meat into jerky. all in all, the battle wasn't too great (except for me trying to figure out how an owlbear would sound), but the aftermath was pretty cool. they spent a short rest eating Owlbear meat (which I described as really greasy, but tough) and discussing what else might be in the area. on a side note, the next encounter (I made a Random encounter list specifically for the hag's bog) was against two scarecrows and the wild Magic Sorcerer ended up accidentally creating a temporary portal to the Far Realm which a Gibbering Mouther crawled out of.... that was fun

I could never take owlbears seriously myself. Even in 4e where they were a bit scary to come across, the description always sort of got a snicker at of me. When you're fighting murderous and horrible things,a big bear with an owl face is just sort of out there. Granted, it isn't nearly as stupid as some of the other Gygax creations *See lionhead on a string of lion limbs*, and admittedly it is iconic now.
