As a lifelong DM, describing sexual assault is not as bad as it gets. There are some groups that like to add rape as their game actions and role-play the details of it... that's why the "no rape" rule is such a common one, even in games where the whole dang party are evil characters who would probably do it.
@dillongage
@dillongage 2 жыл бұрын
@That80sGuy1972 especially since people want to go into such detail. I MIGHT be able to let it slide if it was vaguely alluded to and ended with a fade to black, IF it had some relevance to character development or something, but when it starts getting graphic it's a no go. Even consensual stuff should just be a vague allusion with fade to black.

@@FuugaNatsu Decades ago, before Warforge were a thing, I DM'd a group that had specialized golems after my group spent a lot of time watching Terminator, its sequels, and reading some related media. The HK-47 version was a specialized Mechanical Golem. The T-800 equal was a Mechanial Golem covered by Flesh Golem parts. The T-1000 was a heavily modified version of my Player Character Changeling (which was already a take on the Player Character Doppelganger). One Combat Technition was a Dwarf (Technomancer, a homebrew wizard type, similar to what came decades later known as "artificer" [if that's how it's spelled]), and I forget the rest but they were "fleshy things". It was a fun take on AD&D as an AD&D version of Terminator in it's post Judgement Day world. The HK-47 did a lot of damage, was hard to hurt, and could take a lot of punishment, but there are some down sides to needing a technition, needing costly parts, weighing over a ton, and having treads as your only mobility.

That last story - Christ! The player gives the DM a sketch of an orc woman (fashioned after the DM) being sexually assaulted by the player's character and when he's called out on it, not only does he claim to have been drunk, but that he was also crushing hard on the DM (implying this sketch was his way of conveying his attraction to her). The "rapist" story reminded me of a short story of my own: In our descent into Avernus campaign, while still on the material plane, My human divine soul sorcerer / Twilight domain cleric had been the only one in the party to charge into a burning temple upon hearing a child crying for help (half the party was evil and our lawful good paladin and neutral forge cleric always sided with the evil characters for whatever reason). My character, Augustus, charges in, and manages to save a young girl by throwing her out the door as a pillar falls on him, almost killing him. He manages to get free, and from that point on is very protective of the child. He learns that she has a relative in the next town over, and plans to take her there, keeping her distracted with his "nice horsey" that she rode with him. At the next town, the party finds the relative, an older grandfather or uncle I think, and PVP almost breaks out when one of the evil characters makes a veiled threat asking for payment from them. I believe the cleric sided with me in paying the poor family money so they could afford to care for the little girl. Here is where the big issue occurs. As the party goes to leave and sleep in their barn for the night (as they had gratefully let us do), the little girl goes and tugs Augustus' hand, and says she wants him to sleep in her room for the night to make sure she is safe. I thought this was adorable, but both in and out of character I knew how it may seem odd to the older relatives, so Augustus' first reaction was to look to the relative and ask if they were okay with this, which they were. I think you can see where this is going with the problematic party, when one or two of them start making pedophile jokes about my character, which everyone laughed at. This was obviously upsetting, and I felt like I couldn't have nice moments with children around this party simply because my character was a man. I was in a poor mood the rest of the session, but I believe before we left the town to proceed with our quest to go to Avernus, Augustus found a woodworking shop and paid for a handmade horse model to be made and sent to the little girl's family, because she liked his horse so much, to give her something to remember him by.

The found family friend is so weird. Like, you're usually into that trope because you want to avoid, dismantle, or overcome the dysfunction, overstepping of boundaries, and abuse that can come from people who aren't bound by much besides blood in favor of the joy that comes from being around the people that you want to surround yourself with and the community that you want to be a part of, but here she is trying to replicate those exact problems with her "found family." Regarding the "Wait, You Want to Contribute?" Story: DMs, you should always be honest with your players about what kind of game you're running and what sorts of abilities/gear will, or will not, be useful. If you're going to run a game where non-combat skills are going to basically be useless, let your players know that. If you're going to run a game where magic is absurdly rare and its practitioners are persecuted, make sure your players know before they start rolling up sorcerers and wizards. And if your game is going to take place in an environment with extreme cold, make sure they know to pick up warm weather clothing. This doesn't seem like it should be hard, and yet...

23:35 In the spirit of the request for advice: 1. Don't sign up ten players to a game. Overlarge groups make for extremely slow gameplay. People will be less motivated to come out for something like that. 2. Don't ask people to commit to nine-hour sessions. Anybody who tells you that they can and will show up to a regular game that's longer than the average working day is just not going to do that. They might think they will... but they won't. It's an unreasonable ask. (This is different if you're twelve and the game is part of a sleepover or something, but nine solid hours on VTT is otherwise just not going to be an attractive prospect for most people.) 3. If you're playing on VTT, make sure you've got your audio sorted before the session. 4. Also... usually not a great sign if combats are taking four hours? A game that consists of waiting forever while nine other players take their turns is pretty demoralizing. Most DMs have had slogs come upon them from time to time, it happens, but if that's *half* of an *eight-hour session* which is also the *first* session... ouch. It sounds like your group conveyed what they really thought of all this when they no-showed en masse the session after. No, they probably do not care about the campaign at this point, and in what you describe, there are some clear clues as to what the reasons might be for that (shitty though it is that more than half of them just ghosted you, the least one can do is send a quick direct message or something). I'd try scaling things back, recruiting a smaller group, and shooting for more focused sessions. (IDK how much help this is going to be given that I'm now realizing I'm two months late, but I'll leave it up.)

I have a story I need to tell. First, a little background. I've always been the DM going all the way back to the early 90's. Nobody else wanted to and I'm alright with taking up that mantle so, that's how it's always been. Needless to say, when I got a chance to finally join a group where I could just be a player, I jumped at it. I was ready for anything. I didn't care how they played or what happened, I was gonna play with this group... I was not prepared. The DM was really good. He and I worked together to create a character that we were both comfortable with. I ended up being this "human", female, priestess that was secretly a sort of revenant undead. Mostly because I enjoyed the juxtaposition of being this undead horror who is good natured and loves all living things. Was honestly surprised by how willing the DM was to let me play an undead character. I was extremely excited. This was gonna be a great campaign! *foreshadow* *foreshadow* First session starts. We do the basic meet and greet. Everyone seems pretty cool. Five guys and one girl so five players, one DM total. All in their 20's except for me and the DM. We sit down and take turns explaining our characters and their motives. When it gets to my turn the other players look visibly upset as I'm explaining my character. Next player is explaining her character when one of the other guys interrupts with: "I'm sorry but, did you say your character is... female?". I look over at the DM who just kinda shrugs. So I respond with: "Yes. Person-X was trying to explain her character, though and I'd like to hear what she has to say.". She continues telling us about her sweet, buff barbarian when she is interrupted again: "Sorry to interrupt you Person-X but, how are you guys ok with this?". The DM and I are both confused and barbarian girl is looking kinda frustrated now. I'm gonna do my best to transcribe what happened next: DM: "What wrong? If you have a problem you should really wait until someone is done speaking to say something." Guy 1: "Am I really the only person who finds this guy really creepy?... No offense." Guy 2: "No he's a creep. Why is he here?" Guy 3: "His hair is gray and he's playing a young girl. That's kinda fucked up man." Me: Just sitting right across from them feeling anxious and confused while staying very silent. DM: "If it's bothering everyone so much then I guess we can talk about it. But this is kind of inappropriate.." Barb-Girl: "Inappropriate!? You guys are ignorant! My character is this big, buff guy. Why can't he play a girl if he wants!??" Moment of awkward silence... Barb-Girl looking at me: "How old are you anyway?" Me: "I turned 41 this past January." Barb-Girl: "Ok that's a little creepy, I guess." At this point they started arguing and the DM was pretty much silent so I just got up and left. Pretty much without saying anything. Left all my shit there. Not gonna lie, I was kind of emotional about it. Even just writing this is bringing back some strange feelings for me. Had to get my stuff back from the DM later who was really upset that I left. But, wtf was I supposed to do in this situation? I admit I probably could have handled that better but I was about two seconds away from shouting at them in anger and I did NOT want that. Haven't joined or hosted a group since then. It's been about four months, I think. I know they were wrong to act that way but I still can't shake the feeling that it was me who did something wrong. I'll get over it eventually but... It's gonna take some time. x_x

This is really sad to hear! My first D&D group had people of mixed ages, one of the best players of the bunch was a 40 yo dude, we learnt a lot from him. He also managed to calm down conflict between the youngest players and gave advice to the noobs like me. It's their loss they lost you in the game, I'm sure you would have contributed a lot to it!

You see the funny thing with that... They wouldnt let you play them for shit, no matter how old you are :V In particular, likely the sort that cant grasp how someone would want to play a female character, who isnt themselves female, no matter what. They d e f i n i t e l y exist, same for female players playing male characters. Pretty prominent in MMOs as well

We play DnD with his coworker friends and they are nearly all 40+. They play a mix of gendered characters and it has never struck me as odd because we are all sitting around and having fun playing the game. Hopefully you have joined a group as a player since that expirence and had an enjoyable expirence!

@@linglingspacewhales1977 thank you. Y'know, it's funny. Usually when something like this happens I don't tell anyone or talk about it at all. I might say something to my wife but, I usually don't wanna bother her, she works really hard and she has enough stress without me adding to it with dumb stuff like this. But, then something happened. I made this post and started talking to other D&D nerds about it. I honestly didn't realize how much it bothered me until I talked about it. This post was like a weird, first step for me. LoL :)

Okay but the found family one slaps I had a character, whose mother got murdered during the course of the game - basically people in power got super pissed at our party for not letting them do evil things all the time, and since her mom was the person they could get to with little trouble, they killed her, which sent my char into depression and made her resent her previous life choices of going on an adventure at all. At that point she could not quit though, cause the world was about to be destroyed, and she still cared enough not to ditch a quest that involved saving a whole planet. Everyone in the party was chill with that, i asked. They liked my roleplay and the new dynamic my character had with their chars. None of them really liked each other that much, but they respected each other and felt responsible. But the DM ugggh we were having a discussion after the game about what we think of out characters and their future and I said that I don't really see my char getting a full Happy Ending - and I liked that. "Oh, but I want the party to become a family, surely she'll heal with them around" i brushed it off, like sure, he's allowed to have different view on the situation but it became hella persistent in-game, out-game, even when we just went for a walk together, he'll speak about this found family and happy endings i was getting tired our party did not function like family, no and I did not want to do this. My character could not simply just replace her dead mother with a bunch of people she did quests with. Sure, there were some good situations, sure she valued them as comrades and they valued her, but found family would ruin pretty everything that had been established over the course of two real years. No one wanted except him, and it was like he could not see it It was just so annoying We never got to resolve this situation, cause he stopped the campaign because of work problems, but I don't think I'll play with him anymore

I get if a session's first combat runs a little long, because of RNGesus giving both the DM and players the middle finger (The first fight of this DBZ campaign we started this month ran like 20+ minutes because of bad dice rolls on both ends), but fuck me, 3-4 hours for the first combat is just insane. If it was a climatic final BBEG combat, I'd be more understandable...

The last story was just horrifying. That poor woman. If it were me, I'd have run one last session for the party, then went on to describe in graphic detail how their characters were ambushed, captured, and spent the rest of their existence being used by neckbeard ogres, and they all took bets on who would break which party member first. I think that would be suitable just desserts.

To the guy from the “nobody showed up” video-ban them. Ghosters are not players and have no reason to be present at the table. Start operating on strike rules. Get into youtuber discords. Also consider not replacing them and just staying with a 4 man party, because a 10 man party is nearly impossible, 4 man is perfect, maybe 5 if you really wanted more.

If that DM in the Found Family story has any semblance of competency, he wouldn't try to push OP into rushing a forgiveness toward Family Player for intentionally attacking their character with lethal attacks. Who gives a shit if FP isn't having fun, their idea of fun thus far has been crowbarring in a trope that has not been earned and thus feels hollow to the other players and is throwing childish fits when she doesn't get her way.

really? blocking a player because of a race they want to play? A simple "no, it doesn't fit the setting" would have been enough and even then I always try to see if I can't fit in what my players want. Mousefolk? Idk, maybe there is a small settlement that nearly no one knows about (could make a fun sidequest at some point). A homebrew class/race? If it isn't too outlandish it's no problem. if it is a more outlandish one I'd like to have a little justification (one or two sentences usually are more than enough). After all it is the players adventure, you just provide a world and a direction and what if they want to go off the rails? Maybe i can just use the map i made for 2 sessions later for now and have them discover something fun or find something (even if it is just a fun memory or something. A player of mine for example managed to land in prision (np, the rest of the party managed to bail him out and he had lots of fun bullying the bandit they managed to capture the session bevore).

There are Catkin(Large and house variety), Rabbitkin, Ravenkin, Wolfkin, Turtlekin, Owlkin...etc. But in the story, 1200 years ago, the world was at war with hell, the forces of the good guys managed to close the gate they were coming through, cutting off their reinforcements, so, the demons CREATED the Beastkin to be foot soldiers since they couldnt get reinforcements anymore. So, the Beastkin are, distrusted, disliked and people can be outright hostile towards them. I think its works well.
