Great story. The ending in particular made me smile. So far none of our party members have died, but we have gotten close on a number of occasions. Nezghani Yahzee (Half-Elf Monster Hunter Ranger). Nearly killed by a dire wolf in Session Zero. Later nearly killed by a wild dog he tried to befriend to be his animal companion. Lesson learned: stop pushing the issue when it's clear you won't succeed. Vistra (Duergar Ancestral Guardian Barbarian). Nearly murdered by a group of ogres after scouting ahead to investigate the source of a noise we could here over 1000 feet away from our location down the road, managing to kill one but the chain ogre beat her into unconscious. Lesson learned: Never split the party, or at least not by that much. Wagner Krieg von Glasfyre (my character, Human Alchemist Artificer). Nearly stabbed to death in his sleep by a very pissed off Oni who was part of the ogre group mentioned before. Lesson learned: ALWAYS HAVE ALARM PREPARED AND CAST BEFORE GOING TO SLEEP.

My first DnD session, we had to travel to a cave in the woods, only to have the worst time at the river. My character fell in due to a bad roll (and poor stats). One of the party nearly fell in trying to get me out, and another tried to throw me a rope but missed. My character was nearly swept away. That ended up the hardest "encounter" of the entire session. We dubbed it, "River Boss."

I remember one game, that was supposed to be a one-shot, turned into a 4-session mini game, all because the GM felt that our party of 5 characters... including a DRAGON as a mount... would easily take on a small horde (ie, 10) skeletons that were only a 1/2 challenge rating each. Now, the party consisted of said dragon, his rider (who was a human warrior), a rogue goblin who collected teeth, an elven bard, and myself, a monk/arcanist halfling (I literally created Chiaotzu from Dragon Ball Z, since it was meant to be a one-shot joke character). EDIT: I forgot the Paladin, who had a lion that was the embodiment/favoured creature of his God/Goddess. Not sure why I forgot that, as Chiaotzu didn't walk around with the rest of the party (he has short legs), and instead rode around on the lion when not in combat. What the DM hadn’t accounted for is that event the frigging DRAGON couldn’t hit these things due to how poorly we were all rolling, and that they’d given these skeletons old armour that gave them 18+ ACs. In the end, it took me raining down spells from above (I had boots of levitation, so I wouldn’t be in melee combat) to start wiping them out... And yet when we came up against a giant’s skeleton that the BBEG had raised, we managed to defeat it with ease... Also, I nearly died by taking a fireball to the face, thanks to my terrible AC and low HP xD

To pass through my players will have to find lanterns of eternal flame dispersed through it, acting as guide.
