Welcome back for another story from my Dungeons and Dragons game! The players took a job in a rural town of Parnast and were forced to take along a kid who does nothing but get into trouble and hinder them. Enjoy!

I can only imagine that 30 years down the line, our heroes reunite to reminisce about the old days, only to be swiftly captured by a small army of knights and mages. When they are brought before their leader, he asks them if they think he is being serious. To their confused responses, he has his men beat them within an inch of their lives. Broken and battered, our heroes ask who he is. The man holds up a single copper penny. "Do you remember how much I was worth?" He drops the penny. Upon his orders, his men leave the broken adventurers in the filth. For Sir Wallace the Great is an arbiter of justice. They allowed him to live, so it was only right that he do the same

@@nickwilliams8302 yea... i'd have wallace follow them regardless... oh you wanna stealth? But wallace, following you does not know that and he triggers the trap/ the senses of the monster. Oh you want to run? Wallace sees his chance to be a hero so he jumps in between you and the monster saying he'll delay it... just... tell his parents he loves them. (One way to villafy or humanize the npc) Or... just have him leave the city on his own. And then when you come back you see a city in mourning. you are met with untrusting eyes, looking you over like an animal looks at a predator that it hates but also fears. (If a character rolls perception or has a pasive perception of x+: As you are about to turn the corner you hear: "Ah... those bastards are back. Wallace only wanted to help, he didn't deserve to die. * you stop your party and listen closely* It's all because of them... showing up, putting dreams of greatness and heroism in the lad's head. We need to get them out before they corrupt any more of our kids. " You find out that wallace left after you but met with a fearful fate at the hands of a pack of wolves you avoided on the way... (or something relatively low level they missed, skipped etc...) And when they come back later wallace story grows until towards end of the campaign it becomes... wallace: the brave man that protected a band of adventurers from clear death, giving his life against a dragon to save the village and allow the pitiful adventurers to escape. You can even have a + 25% penalty for any goods/ potions they want to buy from there and a -4 penalty to investigation in the city area. Since now they are looked upon with disgust and hate.

@nickwilliams8302 6 жыл бұрын
TheBloodypimp "i'd have wallace follow them regardless" WHY? For God's sake _why?_ How is that remotely fun for anyone involved? It's the _textbook_ example of railroading. If the players want to take some commoner with no weapon proficiencies with them, cool. If they don't, _why in the name of all that's decent would you try to force them?_ Respect the players' decision and move the fuck on with the adventure. You're practically _begging_ the players to shift into "murder hobo" mode. Or did you not watch the video? Did you not _see_ the players fury towards this unwanted imposition rise? This is how it happens, Pimpboy. This is how a campaign derails into senseless violence. Because, of course, the problem with railroading is not the railroad itself; it's the players' attempts to get off it. If an adventure requires that the PCs bring an NPC along for the ride (which, by the way, this one doesn't; it just looks like it does), then it's the DM's responsibility to sell that to the players. Fucking raise Wallace's game. Make him the village marksman (ie. Archer Fighter) rather than just a commoner. Have Wallace's Daddy offer them a fuckload of coin to take the little shit out into the wild and make a man of him. Give the players a _reason_ to take this person along with them. Just presenting the players with a useless NPC then punishing them for realising that they're useless - and behaving accordingly - is a sure sign of an utterly shit DM. You would be literally punishing your players for roleplaying. Then a couple of sessions later, you're hitting up D&D channels for advice on how to deal with "problem players" when the problem is _you._

If the players don’t want to bring him along, you are free to change the module as long as you keep the spirit of it alive (The DM is empowered) Wallace is not needed, and even if he would be he could follow the party anyway at a distance or set out on his own to meet them back later. This was a funny video though.
@Elamdri
@Elamdri 6 жыл бұрын
Marc Lucksch if you watch the video it's clear that puffins didn't read the adventure beforehand, because he didn't know that the town would praise Wallace. Which means he was probably reading it from page to page, which probably why he didn't let them not take Wallace, because he didn't know how significant or insignificant he would be.

Hmm... it sounds like using the pre-made adventures for DnD would be a good way to start learning how to make your own adventures. They leave out important parts such as "What if the party does not want to bring along the NPC with no redeeming qualities?" for you to make up yourself. Maybe leaving Wallace behind would cause him to snap from all the years of rejection with this being the last straw, so when you return to the village, there's a swarm of demons ransacking the place because Wallace went and performed some dark ritual to "gain the power to never be rejected again" or something like that. :P

Ran a modified version of this adventure as a prequel to Tyranny of Dragons to explain how the Kobold Bard and Dragonborn Paladin met. In doing so, I took my cue from Puffin's two Parnast videos and gave Wallace a -1 modifier on all modifiers and 8 HP. Wallace and the group got lost, and then they got the Satyr. When Parnast was attacked by the gnolls, both the bard and the paladin were temporarily unconscious, and the satyr and Wallace had to defeat the gnolls, which the satyr, who had stayed out of all conflicts until then, actually did quite well. Both PCs actually managed to survive and Parnast erected a statue in honor of Wallace. Part of the statue display also showed the Paladin kneeling before Wallace. Funny thing about this is that Wallace, thanks to his -1 modifier actually managed to do 0 damage a few times even IF he hit once with his attack roll. Both the player and the character to this day have a dislike for Wallace and also for Parnast. In the meantime, within the campaign, the group moved to Parnast, which was now controlled by the Dragon Cult. The Paladin saw the statue for the first time and decided to destroy it. This attracted the attention of the cultists and resulted in a conversation with the captain. In fact, the paladin and the captain of the cult had mutual respect for a short time, because both agreed on the point of view that no one really cares about Parnast.

I think pre-made modules can be good if done right. More specifically, One-shot modules with a clear goal, character choices, and encounter choices is probably the way to go for starting an adventure. My example of a good One-shot would be a Helms Deep style setting, where an attack is imminent on a fortress that MUST HOLD STRONG in order to prevent an enemy's eventual conquest. Between Swords, Arrows, Spells, Tactics, and Intrigue, the Helm's Deep One-Shot could easily become something special if a GM creates an interesting story with it.

My favorite D&D memory is when infiltrating a meeting of nobles, my and a friend sit down at the meeting table in disguise. See the thing with making a good npc is that they have to be useful or interesting enough for the party to care about. One of my players acquired a bar and so attracted a follower in the form of a sage. Only she was still going to school and was working at the bar part time to pay for tuition. The party really liked her because she wasn't strong, but she was sarcastic, unphased by their weirdness, and super knowledgeable in history and religion. Anytime they felt over their heads in lore, they could turn to her to get an answer or at least several plausible ideas of an answer. When the young sage got kidnapped because of an affair she had been having with some noble, the party were super invested in getting her back. They skipped out on their main quest, just to make sure their sage was alright.

It's weird but we rarely had a NPC that either the DM allowed us to ignore or we somehow made into a likable character for one or more PC 1. Curse of Strahd we just dropped off Irena with a wizard...who turns out was Strahd in disguise. 2. Out of the Abyss. Stool a mushroom creature became a follower of Helm and was taken as a protege by the cleric and paladin. Kinny our elf ranger npc hooked up with our PC fighter 3. Tomb of Annihilation was interesting. We stopped this kid from commiting a petty theft and he was to be taken to executioner's run which was a race down a long hall while captors jumped out and chased you. So most of the party was 'he got what he deserved' but the cleric felt it was too harsh of a punishment for the kid and took his place on the run. The remaining PCs were not happy but did what they could to keep the cleric live. Later the cleric took the kid to his temple to be raised thereso the Zhentirum could not get to him as they were the ones who told the kid to commit the crime in the first place. So after the party heads into the jungle the Zhents show up and force the temple to give them back the kid. So after an encounter in the jungle in which the cleric rescues the kid again he makes the kid his apprentice/acolyte. So later the cleric pisses off the princess of Ohm and the DM make a me roll for the kid to defuse the situation after the princess sees him and develops a crush. I roll a Nat 20 and the kid becomes the high priestess to the princess and the cleric lives. So sometimes I think players should make the most of an NPC and not be so hard up when a DM introduces one.

Puffin Forest : You know... I keep thinking that Lil-Wallace is actually a cursed NPC. The town is required by a Eldritch being/evil curse to Have a "Hero". Who is compelled to act like Lil-Wallace, and is replaced by transforming one of the party that allows the "Hero of Parnast" to be killed, or the one who actually kills him, into the Next Lil-Wallace. Meanwhile... I'm torn between total party kill that powers the whole thing with the soul's of the remaining party members, or having the party need to make saving throws versus waking up elsewhere (with no memory of events beyond vague impressions)/blaming the New Hero for all the actions of the pervious Hero. I'm also torn between the NPC townsfolk being soulless meatsacks pretending to be real to sell the whole thing, Eldritch beings like the fish people of Lovecraftian lore, or the original townsfolk trapped for the eternity that it's taking for the evil plans to come to fruition/just for the torture. Or that maybe they really are cannibals, because the animals that they are hunting in the nearby forest(that is suspiciously inaccessible to any other place), are actually people. Maybe what it takes to meaningfully discover all this is either casting similar detection magic/skills to the ones used in your obelisk video, or coming back to the town and noticing things that now seem off. Like maybe they noticed that Lil-Wallace is not ageing or showing any scars from the last time they were there. Or on second application, so long removed from the last/first time the notice-nothing-wrong wish level spell was applied, that the special conditions necessary for success are glitched. Etc, etc...

@MrJohnny56789 That doesn't mean a player should simply accept being railroaded. A DnD is normally not ran like a videogame. Sure, a certain level of railroading is required, so as long as the adventure gives an acceptable level of the illusion of choice. Also, if a protion of the game doesn't work for the players, the DM should chance that aspect. Fun isn't just within the perview of the DM only, man. The game is a cooperative one for a reason😐

This is the difference between me and you I guess. You decided to make a character who was supposed to be a masculine, armed 19 year old into a kid while citing the module as reason to keep him around, so you could get a fun story. Meanwhile I saw a railroad plot in one of the few modules I've ever ran (the basic storyline and continuation from the Warhammer roleplaying game's second edition) and tried to my hardest to make it less shit, then as I noticed the players taking issue with it went off the rails for the rest of the session so I could get them to decent cutoff point and give them a new adventure of my own design they could actually move around in.

Situations, like this one is as good reason as any to read modules beforehand and adapt them to your party (or discard completely).

Yeah.... no..... if this was my party, if the kid hadn’t already been “accidentally” killed in the woods, at the end moment when he was seen as a hero, my part would have burned the entire village to the ground, and then left wallace alive just so that he could see what his actions of being useless would have caused
@Elamdri
@Elamdri 6 жыл бұрын
Ethan Atwood lol, you have been slaughtered most likely unless you were at the top of the tier. There are tons of people in the town and I am pretty sure some have class levels. Granted a party might kill quite a few of them but they're eventually going to Zerg you down
@therattleinthebook397
@therattleinthebook397 6 жыл бұрын
Elamdri eh, not necessarily. He said he would burn down the village, not engage in a battle, so he has multiple options. 1. Go to the fairy king and tell them that the town is his enemy and their encroaching on his territory. 2 take some vodka, pretending to be good natured drunks, douse the town and fireball once everyone is in position, etc.
@Elamdri
@Elamdri 6 жыл бұрын
The Rattle in the Book The party are not 5th level. They don't have access to fireball. Also, I'm pretty sure that there a hundreds of people in Parnast. Its hard to kill that many with one fireball
@therattleinthebook397
@therattleinthebook397 6 жыл бұрын
Elamdri that's why you coat everything in flammable alchohol first, also in that case use firebolt
@Elamdri
@Elamdri 6 жыл бұрын
The Rattle in the Book okay the party spends days and hundreds of gold on flammable alcohol, only to discover by the end of the first day that most of the alcohol that they had spread in the morning has dried Alternatively I guess you could use flask of oil, which will effectively set fire to one square of a building. However it would take you a lot of so oil and a lot of time a lot of casting a fire Firebolt to burn the whole village down By that point the guards in the village would probably have like enough discover you and surrounded you and killed you

My Party was to play Tyranny of Dragons, and Parnast was an available town to see/visit. I hoped the DM would run us by them and we would meet Wallace, and I would be ready. I was going to play a Dragonborn Paladin lady, I planned on befriending Little Wallace as if he were a little favorite brother, and if he were old enough, befriend him like a favorite little brother...in an anime.

This is why whenever I make/run adventures, I keep them as open as possible. If people want a linear RPG with specific very plot points and forced characters they are going to play a video game like Final Fantasy or Elder Scrolls, situations where those WORK. The main strength of D&D and other tabletop RPGs is how open-ended they are. It's thoroughly disappointed how many official adventures railroad players like this. And if you are going to force an NPC into the party, at least make them so that the party wants to be with and can hold their own. For example from my campaign, two words: wereshark pirate.

This is one of the worst cases of railroading I've ever seen. An NPC that tags along with the party, and the party doesn't get a say in the matter. They're just chained to him.

Here's a story with the worst pun ever. I was in a campaign of a friend of mine, we were all level 4. We had been told a strange man was walking around, we hunted him down. We encountered him, and he shouted "I am the Beholder!" I thought we were gonna die, because beholder, but then he took off his cloak, revealing tattoos of a homebrew goddess in this campaign: Marunia, Queen of Swarms. His cloak proceeded to turn into... a swarm of bees. He wasn't a beholder. He was a f***ing Bee Holder.
