Subscribed, because this is the only review of this product I could find that was under 20 minutes. I also really like the time stamp links. Why is most D&D youtube content so long? Who has time for that? Much prefer your concise, well edited style - thank you!

A tip for anyone who has this and wants to solve the crease issue. You'll need an iron, ironing board, and some moderately thick tea towels/drying towels/whatever you call the things you use to dry dishes in a kitchen. (This guide is working from a basis of someone who has only the general concept of what ironing is, so feel free to skim if you're actually familiar with ironing in practice.) Step 1: set the iron to its lowest temperature and to not use steam. (If you can't turn the steam off entirely, just use it for ordinary ironing purposes until you run out of water in it). You may need to increase the temperature above the absolute minimum, but if you go too hot, you might do some damage, so start at the lowest and do a test. Step 2: Set up ironing board and heat up the iron. (If you're not used to doing this, please note that ironing boards tend to have collapsible legs that are a little finicky and that even at its lowest temperature, irons are well and truly hot enough to cause you a world of pain if you touch the heated part. A good way to test if it's hot is to spray or flick some water onto the flat metal plate - it should evaporate pretty much instantly.) Step 3: lay your map out on the ironing board, making sure that the crease you're going to press is as smoothed out as you can get it and is on an entirely flat part of the board. If you've got a board where some parts are more padded than others, use the area with the least give. Step 4: lay out a couple of tea towels over the map where you're going to press. One might be enough, but as with the temperature, you can fix a partly pressed map crease more easily than you can repair what you've done if you overdo it. Poster grade maps aren't cheap, so it's worth taking the time to minimize your odds of damaging it. Step 5: press the iron onto the towels over where the crease is. Don't push hard, just glide it along the surface. The iron's weight is pretty deliberately set to provide the right amount of pressure. Step 6: remove the towels and inspect the crease you just pressed. If it's still there, remove a towel (minimum of 1 - you don't want the iron directly on anything but fabric or metal) or tweak the heat up slightly and try again. Once you're satisfied with the area you're working on, move on to the next. (If you're new to ironing, don't be afraid to take breaks. It's unpleasantly hot work, and while it's nowhere near what you'd get if you try blacksmithing, it's way hotter than most activities people otherwise do. Take the time to cool off every once in a while, and if you've got someone who irons your clothes for you, make sure you thank them for doing this most unpleasant task for you.) There may be some lingering damage from the original creasing - both outside and inside edges of a crease tend to lose a bit of ink no matter what you do, but that's much less than continuously unfolding and refolding the map would do over time. Note that once this is done, the creases will no longer be usable for folding up the maps. If you have a suitable space, lay them out flat for storage, if not, look into getting yourself a map tube. I'm not sure how easy they are to find in the days of digital mapping - back in the analogue days, whenever someone had to transport a detailed map safely - the kind an engineer, geologist, etc would use in planning out a project - they'd tuck them in a roughly 3 inch diameter cardboard tube for shipping, specifically to prevent creases. Map tubes are not an ideal storage system - being stored in a rolled shape will imprint a bit of a curl on the paper (which can be countered using the same ironing tactic, just used more broadly since there's no specific crease lines to target). It is, however, substantially less harmful than even a short term crease can ever be. If you want to get really fancy, you might be able to find an old piece of furniture called a map cabinet. It's just like any other cabinet, but it has drawers that are 1-2 inches apart, each holding enough space for a map to be laid out flat, possibly about 10 deep per drawer or so. They're *bloody* heavy and most places getting rid of them tend to turn them into kindling rather than moving them because they're effectively a solid block of wood with moving parts that let you stick maps in it, which makes it easier to destroy than move. This is what the aforementioned engineers, geologists and such would store their maps in when not transporting them around, and is the best way to store maps when it's actually essential that you keep them safe. (It's massively overkill for most people's D&D map collection, but if you're *really* interested in collecting maps, this is what you store them in.) I think there are also metal ones, which may be lighter because they can maintain structural integrity with less material, but the one I'm familiar with is my Dad's wooden one (which is well on its way to becoming the pile of kindling I mentioned despite his best efforts.)

Hey! Thanks for the write-up! Sounds like a reasonable solution to a pesky problem. Wish they just sold the maps in a poster tube to begin with! I will say that with similar maps we've gotten decent results by just placing the map on the table and covering it with heavy books or board games over night to flatten it out . It. of course. won't remove the creases entirely, but I felt like it made the maps fine to use. If you do want to remove the creases as much as possible, I think your technique is probably the only way to achieve that! Good job! -Theo

Have been eyeing this product for a little while and when you took out the map I got quite excited. But they're fragile and you sadly can't really draw on them and on top of that: the farmer map was one of the only ones I really liked. So thank you for the review. This probably saved me some money that I could've spent elsewhere.

Thanks for the review. It's great art but I think they've missed the mark a bit on this. The products are nice and portable but with being delicate paper are going to be difficult to take "out and about" without being damaged. For home use it's either laminate or get a sheet of acrylic. Probably a pass from me. For my travel kit I'm sticking with the "big book of battlemats" I acquired last year. If you ever do look at third party stuff I'd encourage you take a look. It's similarly priced to these maps, A4 (but there's an A3 version available) and includes thick, laminated battlemats which are spiral bound. Great little product. As always love the detail in the videos!

Thank you for the suggestion. That definitely looks like a good solution to the "portable but durable" problem. I'll look into it a bit more. Cheers!

Thank you, Mr. Theo. Just ordered one of these. Not going to protect them with anything, because I think that would potentially reduce portability or increase the creases, so we'll see how much they last as they are.

Hi, i know this is quite late, but i was wondering about purchasing this, how large are the aps in paper size (A1,A2,A3) etc. because in my country this costs $35, and i can print A3 Sheets of these alltogether for less than $20.
@TheGallantGoblin4 жыл бұрын
No such thing as late for product reviews! The maps measure about 21x30 inches (or about 533x762 mm), which isn't really a standard print dimension. If you want to reproduce the maps at full size, they are slightly smaller than A1 paper size. You could also split them onto 4 A3 sheets and then tape them together. -Grady
