They knew the guns had been moved because of the daily reconnaissance flights along the length of the coast. The guns had been moved to Grandcamp-Maisy. It was too late to alter anything because D-day was only months away so, the Rangers had to land as planned, take and hold the T-junction at Pointe-du-hoc, leaving enough men to hold it and advance on Grandcamp-Maisy. But they had to wait 2 days for reinforcements and tanks to arrive to do the job which meant the guns at Grandcamp-Maisy were still able to fire on the landings. This was discovered by the British military historian Gary Sterne who found a map in a US military uniform he bought while in the USA. This then lead to the Foucher Farm site being rediscovered after being covered over after the landings. It’s now been restored and is open to the public. Think there is a video about this on KZbin .

Minor comment but the practice when the deaths took place could not have taken place in summer of 1944 as the actual invasion had already taken place, 06th June, which is before the summer started.
