“If you don’t protect that beach, the men can’t come in, if the men can’t come in, you can’t win a war.”
Staff Sergeant (SSgt) Irving Locker landed on Utah Beach with the 116th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Gun Battalion on D-Day. 80 years later, he recounts what he experienced that historic day.

I went to the American Cemetery in Normandy today and cried went then to the Pointe du Hoq site and museum and saw an amazing video from this American Memorial Bureau. Then I came here to find their channel and watch this soldier's amazing story and his wisdom. May God Bless you and thank you for your service.

My Grandfather was Sgt. Jim Casey with D Company. His company lost one of its guns during the landing at Utah Beach and he always thought the gun that's there at the museum might belong to his company. Thank you Irving for your service and I would love to hear more as my Grandfather only shared but so much. I have his book from the 116th AAA and have used that in touring Normandy and Belgium. I know he lost a friend in the mine field during the landings at Utah Beach and he went in to try to help. We are forever indebted to the service of Irving and all the others who gave so much while asking for so little in return.

My Dad John Hackney was also in the 116th AAA Gun Batallion and was a Technical Sergeant with Dog Company. He was the radio man. Irving is a true inspiration and glad to see he made it to Normandy after 80 years!

One time I asked Uncle Irv how he managed to survive storming Utah Beach on D-Day. “I’m only five foot one inch tall. I’d find a taller guy and follow him. And if he got hit, I’d find another tall guy and march behind him.” 😂
