D-Day Newsreels - What the General Public saw in June 1944

These film newsreels were produced shortly after the D-Day landings. They are the first images seen by the general public in Allied nations when the went to "the movies." While by no means historically definitive or "objective," they give a good idea of what the public saw and how Normandy was portrayed by news organizations.The last film, "Eve of Battle," also gives a briefing on the general situation in the European Theater as it was covered at the time.

Visited the vet's cemetery today to visit dad who also did his part during the war years, had to pay homage to the countless others there who saw service in WWII. Heard on the radio it's down to about half a million WWII vet's who are still with us as of today, their numbers are depreciating every day yet their memory does not. We must 'never' forget all of those who gave so much -- regardless of what war it may have been -- to ensure the quality of life that we are so indebted for!

Not to take away from those that paid for this victory with their flesh.... But one of the most amazing feats was the loading, launching and assembling of this vast armada. 1 minute AHEAD of schedule, everything loaded in reverse order. Of course they showed the 3rd wave landing not all the dead from the 1st and second and show the british landing with no resistance

Thank god for the supply guys, the Navy, and the Army Air Corps transport plane crews! This wouldn't have gone well for the Infantrymen and Paratroopers that landed on France that day in history. The US Military and the Allies were excellent in logistical planning in conjunction with their assault.

The people in the greatest generation were a lot more tough than people of today. WW2 vet: "I got shot in the leg by a kraut, but I kept on fighting because I had to." Millennial: "I dropped my $7 Starbucks on my iphone 10, and now I want to kill myself." 😛

Yeah my father was part of D-day and didn't notice he'd been shot in the leg till it was pointed out to him during lull in fighting.

It's going to get worse in the generation growing up now.
