This year marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the largest amphibious invasion ever. The successful landing by air and sea of tens of thousands of Allied troops on June 6, 1944 would prove to be a turning point in the Second World War. Failure could have forced the Allies back into the sea. The battle raged across Normandy until late August, with the Polish 1st Armored Division, led by General Stanisław Maczek, arriving on August 1 and playing a crucial role in the eventual victory.
Death and brutality surrounded D-Day. Normandy’s beaches witnessed thousands upon thousands of causalities, pure chaos, pain and fear.
The operation's impact was profound. Hitler's refusal to let his commanders retreat led to a more decisive Allied victory as enemy units were fully engaged and destroyed.
Every year, the French authorities organize a significant commemoration event of the Normandy landings, as a stark reminder of lessons from the past.
Perhaps that is why, this year, Russian representatives were not invited.
Join Jan Darasz and his guest: Robert Kostro Director, Polish History Museum, in this episode of 'How We Got Here' to learn more about D-Day and how Polish soldiers helped to liberate France and the rest of Europe during the second world war.
