My great uncle Jim was a British tank commander during D Day. He was sitting on top of the lead tank with the top hatch open when a German anti aircraft gun, with its barrel lowered, sent a shell directly into the front of his vehicle. He was blown 30 foot in the air suffering extremely bad burns and landed in a ditch. His life was saved when a platoon of African / American soldiers found him later that day. He was so badly burnt and blackened from his injuries that the African American soldiers assumed he was one of their own and he later regained consciousness in an American field hospital! Amazingly he survived and subsequently lived well into his 80’s. Heroes

I have been in a very teary state leading up to this Ann. Now watching the clips. I am worse I am Canadian. My Dad landed on Juno Beach that day at the age of 20. He never talked about it. We watched the specials on TV but he never spoke about it He had a good life when he came home. Worked hard and had a good life. My parents raised us to be appreciative and strong. We offered to take him to the 50th Ann celebrations but he didn't want to go. Seeing some of these gentlemen in the beach band their emotions. I understand now. To see your friends and comrades fall, to know you must push on, to know that the future for your grandchildren, and their grandchildren, depended on you that day. How all the Jews trapped in concentration camps depended on you for their futures as well. How I would love to spend hours with them and hear their stories. We must also make sure that those who fought and those who lost their lives on D day so we can live in freedom and peace did not do so in vain. All talk of a 'world war three' needs to stop, now. We must be better, we must think better and we must do better, for us and for them.
