Part of living a more Zero Waste life is to consume less plastic.
So I decided to make reusable produce bags.
"Plastic bags are from the same source as all plastic: crude oil. Like everything else manufactured from this non-renewable resource, it has two major drawbacks: manufacturing it emits considerable amounts of pollution, and the product is not biodegradable. In other words, it is difficult to produce, and nearly impossible to get rid of once produced. According to the Natural Environment website, 60 to 100 million barrels of oil are required to manufacture a year’s worth of plastic bags worldwide, and it takes approximately 400 years at least for a bag to biodegrade."

Cute idea and simple instructions. I would use the bottom of the shirt to become the drawstring top. It is already a finished edge and you do not need a finished edge at the bottom. That makes a little less work. Also, kids T-shirt’s are perfect for smaller bags.

Yes please do more DIY videos! I'll probably have to end up buying a lightweight material to make these bags, as I pay for produce by weight at my green grocers, but hopefully I can find something at a charity shop to re-purpose.

I'm thinking maybe old net curtains would be lightweight enough.

Hey! What I have been doing is weighing the bag and marking it so every time I go to the store I tell them to take off a certain weight at the check out. Works every time :)

Great idea! I made similar cloth bags out of t-shirts but I found they were a little long. For making produce bags I'd definitely want them a bit smaller and the drawstring style looks more practical. :)

Yes the drawstring I found is very practical to keep all the produce in. Sometimes I do like long ones for my lettuce but definetly short ones are good too.

Great video, though I decided to purchase some to hand it to my family members as they'd always bring a new plastic bag from the grocery store (was thinking the purchased one would be a bit "fancier", so they'd get used to carrying it).

Thank you for this video! I need produce bags but i didn't want to order expensive ones online and I had no idea how to make my own. However I don't have a sewing machine, can I sew them by hand or will they not be strong enough?
@ElysiaRaimondo
@ElysiaRaimondo 7 жыл бұрын
Rachel Davis oh you can sew them by hand as long as you sew very tight seems. It wont be as sturdy but it can get the job done until you make some with a sewing machine. im glad this video gave you some ideas!✌

The first bag- it would have been easier to sew the loose end with a zig-zag stitch, then cut a small hole on the inside of the hem to thread a drawstring through.
