I gave up on the points after I bought my450sl 3 years ago. I spent a fair amount of time on them too. Finally got frustrated and Megasquirted it. This video would have changed my mind. The ecu conversion was a lot of work.

Thanks for you comment which was unfortunately truncated. It is really frustrating when a car isn't running right. I just posted a video on our classic Fiat 238 van which has spat out coolant ever since we have had her. In the end, the problem was something so simple....namely a faulty radiator cap. I know my videos are not the most interesting or engaging for many viewers, but they are designed to help people avoid or fix these frustrating issues. Mike

Mike, Just a note to thank you for your videos. I'm working on / enjoying a 280SL and your video's are an absolute go-to. Today I solved my screeching fan belt in about 5 mins after watching your video on same. If you ever decide to do an Irish road trip in your SL be sure to reach out.

Thanks for the comment. Glad to hear videos are useful. What year is your 280SL? As a fiddle player, would you believe I have never been to Ireland! Might try and catch a festival there this year with my cheeky g daughter...who is also plays fiddle. Mike

Good to hear from you and I trust you are well. It is often the case that people and mechanics not familiar with the Bosch D Jetronic system never think to check out the trigger points. Like you say...who would ever think to look in there? Mike

@@MikesMercsandothercars Hi Mike, all good here in Brazil :) I hope your trip to Oz went well. Mike, you may remember I had my passenger seat out for a refurb. At that point we had the SRS light come on. When the seat came back I’d hoped that it would reset. But unfortunately it stayed on. Then the car went for its annual checkup and they said it would be too difficult to trace and they offered a workaround without fixing it. So I bought an OBD 1 scanner and waited for the car to come back from the SL Shop. So, the scan showed that the fault was with the passenger seatbelt buckle, which ties to the fact that we had the seat out. Anyway, I’m back in a few months and wondered if you had any experience taking buckles apart that you could share?

Hi - I have never taken one apart myself, but how hard can it be? Strangely enough my dads merc had the same problem and he ended up paying HUGE money to have that repaired so that the light went out. Bring it over when you are back and we can take a look. Mike@@Nilfaultfound22

@@MikesMercsandothercars Thanks you Mike. You are right, it can’t be too hard to strip down. But because the fault started when it wasn’t plugged in, I’m thinking it might be a little bit more than just the buckle. Anyway should be back in the UK on or around May 10th. I’ll Let you know closer to the time 👍🏻

Do you have the part number of the breaker point protective cover? The one under the cap.

Hi - the part number is 1 230 500 120.Let me know if you want one and cant find one and I might consider selling you mine. Your broken plug is part of the D Jetronic loom. I am slightly reticent to cut mine off as these looms are quite valuable and hard to get hold of. Maybe a company that sell looms or refurbs them would know where you can get this plug from eg www.cmstores.com. When I take this section of loom out of the car, I will take a closer look at the actual plug. Maybe the wire are brazed on rather than soldered on. Mike

@@MikesMercsandothercars when you say loom you mean the wiring harness? I believe I’ve sourced some parts cars not far from me and I’ve asked about the connector for temperature gauge in the instrument panel. It looks like they’re soldered into the connector. I also can’t find one of the dust covers online yet. Still searching.

Hi - remind me what year your car is...and is it a D Jetronic? On my D jetronic parts car, ECU has its own wiring harness and loom ...separate from things like lights and ignition switch etc. You might find that the dust cover was only present on D Jetronic distributers...I've never seen one on my K Jetronic merc. Yes...I often think that now is a good time to start collecting rare parts. I remember 20 years ago a mechanic told me I should buy a spare cold start valve for my Pagoda. They dont make them now and even if they did it would cost £1000's. Let's hope the trigger points in the red 280SL are good. Mike

There is junk yard here that called "Pick and Pull" .You find the part you want and you pull it out from the car. Whenever I go I pull parts that I may use it one day. Unfortunately, now some people go there just to pull the parts and sell them at very high prices on the EBay.@@MikesMercsandothercars
