अलिफ लैला की कहानी अरब देश की एक प्रचलित लोक कथा है जो पूरी दुनिया में सदियों से सुनी व पढ़ी जाती रही है। 'अलिफ लैला' भारत में अपने अरबी नाम "अल्फ लैला" के प्रचलित बिगड़े हुए रूपके नाम से अधिक जाना जाता है। अरबी में अल्फ का अर्थ है एक हजार और लैला का अर्थ है रात।
यह हज़ार कहानियों का एक खूबसूरत गुलदस्ता है, जिसमें प्रत्येक कहानियां एक फूल की तरह है। इन कहानियों में प्यार, सुख, दुःख, दर्द, धेखा, बेवपफाई, ईमानदारी, कर्तव्य, भावनाएं जैसे भावों का अद्भुत संतुलन है, जिसको पाठकों और श्रोताओं को हमेशा लुभाया है।
दसवीं शताब्दी ईस्वी के अरब लेखक और इतिहासकार मसऊदी के अनुसार अल्फ लैला की कथामाला का आधार फारसी की प्राचीन कथामाला 'हजार अफसाना' है। अल्फ लैला की कई कहानियाँ जैसे 'मछुवारा और जिन्न' 'कमरुज्जमा और बदौरा' आदि कहानियाँ सीधे 'हजार अफसाना' से जैसी की तैसी ली गई हैं।
