From 31st October to 1st November 1620, a lot of artillery shots were fired at Rakovník, according to contemporary written sources. The Imperial Army attracted the attention of the Estates by firing from artillery so as not to record the planned departure to Prague. During these skirmishes, Marek Fugger from a prominent German family, who died the day after, was severely wounded by a cannonball near Maximilian of Bavaria. On 1st November 1620, the church of St. Giles in the western suburb of Rakovník was conquered by Ligistic army and from that day stripped of its roof and filled with soil, it served as an artillery firing post for the Ligists, from which they shelled Rakovník through and over the positions of the Estates positions. Even few fires started burning in several places, but they were always extinguished and the city was not destroyed. What did the artillery of the time look like, what ammunition was fired and what role did it play in the tactics of the Thirty Years' War?
