Based on your video, I got the OBD2 sensor and kept a close eye on my ATF temps. I also noticed the increase in temp when the torque converter would do it's thing and "flare". On my ute, I have found that running it in Manual mode effectively locks up the torque converter above certain speeds anyway. So when Im towing our camper, I just run it manual and never have any problems with ATF temps now. 5th locks at 80kmh and 6th locks around 100kmh so I just flick between or drop it down to 4th when above 55kmh. Easy. It does take a bit more thinking but I kind of like being engaged in the driving process. One thing I did hear, and this may or may not be true, is that a gearbox will flare more when cold to generate heat and get the ATF up to optimal operating temp. So, don't be in too much of a hurry to lock it up. A bit of heat is a good thing. (if the advice I got was correct, of course)

I drive mine in manual mode when towing and or hwy driving, just kicking it back a gear if I hear it unlock so apart from being able to force it to hold the gear lower in the rpm range, pre boost I guess, what is the advantage? I don't see any fuel consumption improvement between struggling in 6th at 1500rpm and doing it easy at 1800 in 5th, same egt too. I find engine temp doesn't climb as much with less load-higher rpm climbing over mountainous areas. I have 2018 model which allows manual shift when cruise (non radar) is on so no issue there. Out of curiosity, what happens when you forget it's locked and say pull into a service centre?

@jobloggs7215 2018? So 4JJ1 and different gearbox I believe? For me, one of the big things I like is how it's basically set and forget like I show in the vid, in auto mode it auto locks above 76 and unlocks when you slow back down below 👍

@ChristianJamesK9 ай бұрын
Exactely the sort of video that I was looking for! If you were to have a guess... what would the % fuel saving be? (Thus giving a ROI)... and that is ontop of the gear selection on Cruise Control, transmission saving, and I've seen some of the other features they are working on... it is just win after win with this one! Well done Adam, an absolute winner of a video.
@VideoShowMeHow9 ай бұрын
Thanks! Actual % improve would be a tricky one without testing, a lot of factors. A quick google has figures 10-20% for other vehicles but yeah would depend on so much, might have to do a test and report back at some point!
@Boostec-ODS9 ай бұрын
We work on the 12-18%. If purely for fuel saving... You're going to see better % with higher loads. So if you're towing 2.5t+, you'll more likely to be around the 17-18%. Say if you're currently towing using approx. 18ltr/100, We would be concerned if you're not saving at least 1 ltr, we would be ok with 2ltr, but the actual figure will be closer to 2-3 ltr. A big lap over the winter months with a decent van around this great country should have it paid for itself well and truely under 15,000kms as a bit of an example (This will vary!) The reduced engine heat, transmission heat also is a factor over-looked, ATF has a steep breakdown point once the temperatures reach over 110 degC. There is other reasons I would like to say that make this a more enjoyable drive in the D-Max. The cruise+manual gear definitely brings some harmony into the cabin ;) Hope that helps

Hey guys, This is totally not a hype-drive post, but for delivery in the next 2-3 weeks, we got 7 units left unallocated with the circuit boards we've had manufactured, after that it will be 3-5 weeks with a number between 10-100 available, then 5-8 weeks about the same number again. Unfortunately the kits are very hands on, with only hardware basics done in mass production, the bootloader, firmware and file configuration takes time and some physical assembly takes time. So if you want one sooner rather than later, I'd say you would probably need to get an order in within the next few days. I really don't enjoy creating any hype, but I've come across quite a few wanting things asap for trips coming up and it's just not a reality that can be accomplished. No complaints on my end, it's keeping me busy... All of my side projects have had to take a break to fulfil orders. The link is in the description Cheers

Transmission expert told me the biggest killer of the 6speed is heat when towing ,the heat is so extreme turns the oil black burns the oil over 100deg reaching 120deg up hills ,problem 1 extreme temp changers from cold 5deg morning winter start to running temp everyday towing work trailer up hill 120deg can lead to trans failed from Orings / seals failing from extreme temp changers , and excessive ware from degraded burnt oil , the factory cooler runs through bottom radiator tank and thus can create engine over heating issues towing up hill ,trans cooler before factory cooler stabilizes the temp removes excessive heat build up thus allowing the factory cooler to do its job and stabilize trans temp .it will take longer to reach correct temp with cooler in winter i let it warm up for 15 minutes before driving

Careful when using LOCKUP for decelerating in any gear but 1:1 direct drive gear. The planetary gear long life reliability needs lockup OFF during decel otherwise excess thrust will cause rapid wear to the planetary gear teeth. That's the same reason why overdrive towing heavy loads is NOT recommended. 2 cents worth :)

We still believe the box is robust enough to tow in 5th/6th. We did develop an earlier "analog" kit for the same gearbox in 2016-2019 that is still in use today. You're technically right, so there is room in the strategy for lock and unlock based on loading aswell. Being in the canbus network lets you see and respond to many signals as long as you understand them.
@robusc49409 ай бұрын
@@Boostec-ODS Agreed since box would be designed for acceleration in all gears but it's the decel in lockup that loads/wears the planetary gear hence the manufacturer lockup OFF in that state. I do like the idea of it but wonder why manufacturers don't do it standard..would need a stronger/dearer box maybe ?? Again, 2 cents worth :)

@@Boostec-ODS LIGHT THROTTLE, light load, level road cruising in high gear lockup GREAT. Which of your gears is 1:1 ratio ? Eg 6 speed auto should be gear 5. That gear PERFECT for heavy towing LOCKUP cruising. More heat generation occurs during planetary gear towing than 1:1 gear. Does your owner manual suggest 1:1 gear towing for a reason ? It's a direct engine to tail shaft drive - planetary gears are simply free wheeling inside of box HEAVY load cruising in high gear lockup needs much more than light throttle. = HEAVY CONSTANT load on planetary gears even on flat roads. $5K in warranty auto gearbox repair taught me that. 3 hour flat road heavy loaded trailer towing top gear lockup constant 90kmh mild - moderate throttle, no warnings/red lights all ok till got home then took FOREVER to engage reverse. 4wD stock standard, no mods, had since new O/drive planetary gears and cages worn, trans sump full of metal fillings. $5K rebuild 15 years 250k ago taught me good lesson.
