So everyone knows 2:03 is the Good Spot where the ZUNpets drop, but is anyone else obsessed with the piano countermelody underneath the trumpet and vocal there? It's so classical ZUN, that piano countermelody and the chord progression sounds like something you'd hear in IN, like IN Extra or something. This countermelody gets its own solo moment at 2:48 too. Such a complex and interesting theme.

Zanmu Nippaku =King of the Silent Bliss of Nirvana= Species: Human-oni Ability: Capable of manipulating nothingness An oni who's reached the absolute pinnacle of eccentricity. She was originally a corrupt monk who distanced herself from all the ways of this world. She lived through the Sengoku period, and remembers all the cruelty and stubbornness of the world. As a monk, she was forbidden from killing, but sensed a strong disconnect between that and the Sengoku-era culture in which one boasted about the number of heads one had killed. She thought that if they were spirits instead of physical bodies, it'd count as salvation instead of slaughter, and started absorbing phantoms and beast spirits. She also absorbed some beast-youkai spirits, thus discarding her life as a human, but she was wise enough to venture into Hell herself before she fell into it. After falling to Hell, her unparalleled abilities and mesmerizing eloquence gained her the trust of the oni. She herself had transformed into an oni already, but perhaps that only helped things along. In contrast to most haughty and overpowering oni, she became an intelligentsia oni who ruled over Hell via dialogue. She was also the one who proposed that they separate Former Hell, given its age and how paralyzed its functions were, and create a new Hell. As a result, there's nobody in Former Hell who doesn't know Zanmu's name. While it may be possible to control unintelligent evildoers with just an overpowering attitude, evildoers with cunning take more finesse. She was very good at pacifying them at such times. Modern Hell functioned very well as a safety net for evildoers, and it had her fine sense of balance to thank for that. Now, several hundred years later, the Animal Realm's beast spirits have set their sights on taking over the surface world. And then-- whether by coincidence or by necessity-- a particular event returned the surface land's ownership rights to nothing. It'd only be a matter of time until the beasts got wind of this, and began to march up to the surface. The Hell oni who saw this as a threat began to consolidate their forces, as if getting ready to wage war at any moment. If a war between oni and beasts occurred on the surface, it'd quite literally be Hell on Earth. Zanmu remembered the era of warring states. Gensokyo surely had no need for such cruelty. She submitted a request for the oni to wait, in exchange for her taking care of the situation. Then, from behind the scenes, she goaded each beast spirit leader into deploying their troops at the same time. Her plan was to put the groups into a three-way deadlock, have them divide and conquer, and ultimately claim them all for herself. She was well aware of each beast's thoughts. It was simple to make them act exactly as she wished. But she didn't know that there was a human in Gensokyo who'd gathered support from the youkai. That certainly changed things. There was no reason to give it to those measly beasts. She'd leave Gensokyo in the hands of that human. That human not unlike herself, who had gathered support from all the oni and beasts.
@55alegria Жыл бұрын
Ooooh! Interesting. So her involvement was just to stop the 3 matriarcs from conquering the human realm (that explains a lot). I guess she must be one of Eiki's superiors. I wonder what is her relationship with Hecatia, since the latter is the Goddess of Hell and likes anarchy. Perhaps Hecatia also likes Zanmu? I feel like they have a lot in common, even if Hecatia doesn't like the burocracy of Modern Hell.

Is it just me or does part of the main melody sound like a melody from Immemorial Marketeers (the melody is in the first choir segment before the climax halfway through the song)? It's only like three rising notes but they sound identical. Since Chimata basically caused 19's incident, and Chimata and Zanmu have similar abilities (Zanmu controls nothingness and Chimata can make one relinquish ownership, which is to say the abillity to return ownership to nothingness) I think it's an intentional reference. Zanmu throughout 19 is basically resolving an incident that revolves around a land whose ownership has returned to a primeval nothingness. As a being that manipulates nothingness, her manipulation of the game's events is, in a sense, just an extension of her ability. She says in-game that her ultimate goal is to obtain the future, and the future, unlike the past and present, can only be represented as nothingness, since it is the symbol of possibility. She's very clearly supposed to be a dark Buddha, and no one (like Sun Wukong in the story) can escape from the palm of her hand. By controlling nothingness she controls the future, and so controls you. Instead of the nothingness of nirvana, her nothingness is the nothingness of the empty expanses of hell. She's also like a hell's version of Reimu (their names are even similar) and controls the balance of hell through her genius intellect, as opposed to Reimu who preserves Gensokyo's balance largely through intuition. Only Reimu who can fly above reality can truly escape from the hand that controls nothingness, which is I think part of the reason why in the end Zanmu entrusts Gensokyo's future to her.

i still find it kinda odd how the rest of the themes in udoalg are kinda empty (ha zanmu power go brrr) and yet the girl with the power of nothingness has the most full theme of them all with at least 3 instruments playing per section, not complaining though, zun is at his best when there are more instruments than you can count in a song, just still not over st.strings being rare and not used in stage or boss themes anymore, made them more full and melancholy especially this one
@55alegria Жыл бұрын
Ok, so apparently her power of nothingess is not only "controlling the void of hell", but she can take some emotions and leave you empty... She can make people depressed! She is a little like Yuuma or Kirby (reencarnation of the Void god): she can absorb things such as feelings and souls

Probably one of the most repetitive tracks ZUN's made recently (and most of them are quite a bit) but this is actually good here. The instruments are so unique for him, especially the weird vocal and it builds up quite nicely as well, I really like the harmonies in the 2:25~ section. Also, this is probably because of how similar the structure and melodies of ZUN's tracks are, but I can hear hints of Old Yuanxian and Memento of All Organisms here and I think that's cool, works well within the track.
@TheLugiaSong Жыл бұрын
The repetition feels like more of a return to form, I feel ZUN's recent style is a lot more freeform than older tracks, and personally the lack of repetition of bars or patterns has made a lot of tracks less recognisable. It is nice to see that style back here!

I could also hear a bit of a similar melody to Extend Ash~ Hourai Victim, nearing the end of the loop 2:49
@aclearbluesky2003 Жыл бұрын
It's repetitive, but it serves pretty darn well as a final boss theme, the final boss themes we've had in recent times are complex, and it might take a little longer to digest what is going on in the themes, this theme is simpler and get you hooked right away, it reminds me of Flowering Night, The grimmoire of Alice, which are similarly repetitive but still sound great

This theme is extraordinary, however I feel like it needed a few more touches in order to reach PERFECTION. With that I mean that I'm missing something like an additional, more developed bridge section between climaxes, because as it is, it can be a little repetitive (though the melody it's repeating is absolute fire 🔥). That and maybe make the ending go a little harder. Even then, this is some of the best things ZUN has ever composed. Instant classic. I can't wait to listen to the arrangements this gem is going to inspire. ❤
