There is a theory about this. A planet buster demon killed Reimu's mother and Reimu had to go to the battlefield immediatelly, as the new shrine maiden. She had no time to even mourn her mother. At that time, she was only 11 and was not able to defeat the demon yet. She would die too, but Yukari had compassion and helped her.
