Despite the exemption of Arabs of an OBLIGATION--though, not from the RIGHT--to enlist--the logic of the premise that the ultra-orthodox is not a Jewish Israeli citizen (only a Jew) is puzzling. The most basic right of citizenship is the right to vote--suffrage. Military service is not a core citizenship obligation and, for any number of reasons, is never a 100% equal obligation. Rather, military service is a pragmatic, security matter, which is modified with circumstances and changing needs in every country. In Israel, because of the nature of strict religious dogmas and the risk of religious dogma to any democracy, a heavy, invasive and/or hostile ultra-orthodox and/or Islamist influence in the IDF could be a serious problem. In both cases, obligatory enlistment should be planned in a pragmatic way with cost/risk analysis. Contrary to the Bernt's premise, there is hardly a place in the world were everything falls perfectly into place, without serious challenges. There are countries where people have dual or triple citizenship. And for Americans there is a difference between citizenship and nationality. Also, in Israel, Arabs who are Zionists have no problem with a Jewish People, the fact that Israel is the Jewish State, or with HaTikva and the flag. France, BTW, is a secular, not a Catholic country. The threat in Franc is from Submission dogma and practices, not from Catholicism. For many reasons, to me, this lecture is a bit ear-frying, narrow-perspective, short-sighted proposition. Among others, since "The Religion of Peace" is spreading in the West in no uncertain terms, contrary to Bernt's description, there's a growing awareness and a leaning towards an American Judeo-Christian culture. In addition to the long time identification of many North American secular humanist intellectuals (eg, Albert Einstein, Carl Sagan, Isaac Asimov, Steven Pinker, Gad Saad and many others) as "Cultural Jews", there is the unknown exact numbers of Crypto/Hidden Jews like Madeline Albright, Karl Popper, but also like many Latino Crypto Jews in Portugal and South America. . To drop the Jewish from the "Jewish State" is to spit at Zionism (and disrespect the international records about the revival of the National Home for the Jewish People). Ironically, pro-Israel, a growing number of secular humanist people from 22 Arab and other Muslim-Majority countries laugh at the failed attempt by Arab Muslims to imitate the Jews and be a Muslim Nation--Umah Islamia--and later, to try to morph into a pan-Arab nation--Umah Arabia. Also, today, more of them recognize that millions of nominal Arabs are not Arabs, but Copts, Imazighen, Kurds, Assyrians, etc. Even in Iran, many know they are not Persian, but Azeri, Beluchi, Kurds, etc. What Israel urgently needs is a firm separation of Religion from Politics... it needs respect for the religious past and a "Cultural Jewish" presence. While maintaining equal voting rights, the Jewish State needs to cultivate this (in a number of ways) among ultra-orthodox and among other ethnic minorities,

I totally agree with you. This lecture was given 11 years ago; today we know that the minute you drop the Jewish element from the state, it will mark the beginning of the end of the state. Look at the HISHTSLTUT of the Muslims on France, etc. The minute the Jewish element goes away, Israel becomes a nation of all its nationalities, and that will mark the death of Zionism and of Israel. The logical flow is as follows: Jewish-->Zionist-->Israeli. In other words, Zionism could not have come to bear with out Judaism, and Israel could not have been established without Zionism, and therefore there is no Israelism without Judaism.

הרצאה חשובה מאד.. מסבירה למה האימרה "יהודית ודמוקרטית" שהפוליטיקאים מרבים להשתמש בה, היא סיסמא חלולה שאין מאחריה תוכן אמיתי.. לדעתי ניתן לקרוא להרצאה - "אשליית הציונות"...

כמה הערות: האוקסימורון הוא לא בין יהודית לדמוקרטית, אלא בין יהודית למדינה. שכן, מדינה יהודית פירושה אפליה אפריורי בין אזרחים יהודים לאלה שאינם, ואילו מדינה אינה יכולה להפלות אפריורי חלק מאזרחיה. דבר נוסף: לישראל אין בעיית גבולות: הגבולות מקיפים אותה מכל צדדיה. הבעיה בשטחים היא קיומה של מובלעת של העדר ריבונות ושל העדר דמוקרטיה. באשר לפתרון של לאום ישראלי שוויוני: הוא מקובל עלי. אבל הזהות היהודית שמנסה הדובר להגניב בדלת האחורית לפתרון שלו היא קונטינגנטית, כלומר, היא יכולה להיות ויכולה שלא, ואי אפשר לקבוע אותה אפריורי.
