🔸Prusias ad Hypium Ancient City Theatre; It is located in the western part of the Black Sea Region, in the ancient Bithynia region.
The history of the Prusias Ad Hypium Ancient City, located in the Konuralp District of Düzce, dates back to the 3rd century BC. Konuralp first appeared on the stage of history under the name Hypios. Kieros withdrew from the stage of history at the end of the 2nd century BC, and the city was named “Prusias” after the name of the king.
🔻The Ancient Theater was built in the city, popularly known as the forty steps, in the Hellenistic Age (300-30 BC). Its additions belong to the Roman Period (30 BC-300 AD). The backstage wall of the two-stage theater in the Prusias ad Hypium Ancient City and a part of the second stage's seating have survived to the present day.
Near the theater of this city, formerly known as Kieros, there are important structures such as acropolis, aqueducts, equestrian gate and its extension walls, western walls, bath and Roman Bridge.
During the excavations carried out at the Prusias ad Hypium Ancient City Theater, remains from the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman periods were unearthed.
🔸Constructed symmetrically in accordance with the plan scheme of Vitruvius, the theater consists of a stage building, a cavea and an orchestra. The main building material is limestone and marble was used in the capitals, pedestals and drums.
The stage building belonging to the theater and the south, east and west walls of the building have survived. The stage building consists of 3 entrances and 7 windows, and its eastern façade has survived to the present day.
The inscription on the stage building with the window arches made up of 9 cut blocks and the door arches made up of 11 cut blocks is quite remarkable. “For the Emperor Caesar Trajan Hadrianus Augustus, his entire house, the holy Senate and the Roman People, Mark luilos Proklos Stage building and its statues on the stage; Except for the decorations inside, he had it built in exchange for the imperial priesthood he had undertaken.”
🔹The sitting part of the theater; It consists of three parts: lower (ima), middle (media) and upper (summa) cavea. The lower cavea consists of 17, and the upper and middle cavea consists of 16 rows of steps. The caveas were built with limestones of various lengths.
🔶Although the construction of the theater started in the 1st century BC, it shows Greco-Roman characteristics. While exhibiting the characteristics of the Greek period with its crescent-shaped structure, the stage building, which was rebuilt in the 2nd century AD, bears the characteristics of the Roman period.
🔺The lion's feet and composite column capitals on the cavea show features of the Early Hadrian period.
In the Prusias Ad Hypium Ancient City Theater, it became the center of Christian settlers in the last classical period and many architectural elements belonging to Christian traditions were found.
🔶Prusias ad Hypium Ancient City Theater is the best preserved ancient theater of the Black Sea Region. Constructed by the combination of a multi-storey and richly decorated stage building and a semi-circular audience hall, it is the product of advanced thinking and imagination with high quality craftsmanship and technological input.
Prusias ad Hypium Ancient City Theater is one of the rare examples of Roman Theatres.
