Dialogical respect for one's interlocutor doesn't necessarily entail an endless openness to their arguments. Many of the controversies before us today are not on the order of disputes about the nature of the Eucharist, but rather positing in frank, stark terms very hard questions, many of which do have obvious moral answers and do not permit a symmetry of interlocution. For example, transitioning children is an unqualified evil, a monstrous maleficence, and while one might engage in dialogue to persuade the semi-insane back to sanity, one cannot confuse that with the sort of discourse that puzzles over the nature of the Eucharist. The attack on racial hegemony is almost quaint these days, where massive institutional power at the level of the universities (and probably not a little in the churches) is dedicated to a new regime of racial stratification. The good shepherd here made a roiling reference to the former president, and one should take such jabs in good stride, admittedly. But it's rather amazing that this late into a Biden administration that has muscularly focused its attentions on transitioning children (and prosecuting whistleblowers in hospitals who report on said), on racial and gender inculcation in the schools, on tethering even school lunch monies to said, on kangaroo courts and various other censorship and intel intrigue against the populace -- that somehow one must go ransacking back to Trump to find an example of moral narcissism in high office. Try this one: Telling a 13-year old girl or boy, born in the image of God, that the way they solve the age-old problems of puberty (defined as discomfort in one's body) is to engage in a decade-long program of surgical mutilation and chemical castration of a Mengelian level -- that to sate their "true" nature in God's eyes.

Fascinating. Like the abolitionists of the 1850’s you have singularly prioritized and elevated the bizarre practice of gender reassignment to the apex of moral failure in society today. I hear you. I do not believe the jabs at trump have anything to do with that; rather Trump / Musk can be used as a reference to a new category of archon in civil discourse, a new shorthand for the pathology of someone like Periander of Corinth (died 585 BC), a seventh sage of Ancient Greece not because of his innate sapiential superiority but because of his ability to buy his way onto the list of the 5 sages; ie, Periander was rich, powerful, successful, practical, jealous and petty, and wanted his name and fame attached to the 5 sages of Ancient Greece so he bought his way in, as if a new president could have his face added to Mt Rushmore. So Periander was also a populist and he knew that if the masses of the poor people were placated, that Periander could have a free hand torturing his aristocratic rivals. Which in turn entertained the poor to see the rich so persecuted by Periander. In this way by speaking of Periander, or any other of history’s dark lords (Commodus, Antiochus, Caesar, Mussolini, et al) trump becomes a new shibboleth by which we, like Shakespeare, can quickly advance a conversation along by a mention of Lear or MacBeth, in which everyone understands the reference! And in doing so, we are not approving of gender reassignment or Biden, rather we are engaging in communication.
