Relating to the lack of AA filter on d500, what are your thoughts on Lifepixel AA removal service for other cameras? I have the D4 in mind specifically, but could apply to any model. They say up front you're trading moire for sharpness though it's correctable in Lightroom.

Hey there! Great reviews of the D500. I was considering buying the D750, but your reviews of the D500 made me reconsider. I mainly shoot indoor sports and the frame rate, autofocus and even the crop factor of the D500 is tempting. However, I need a camera that shines in the ISO 1600-6400 area. Which of these two cameras gives better image quality in this area, would you say and how much of a difference is there?

I have a problem using the D500 in live view with the SB-800 mounted on the camera. The SB-800 will not fire or with one of my SB-800 that fires it drains the camera battery from full charge to drained in 3 shots as if it doesn't use the double A in the flash. My friend has 8 SB-800's and they don't work on the D500 in live view.

Hey Ken, thanks for great videos on the D500. I am seriously considering adding one to go along side my D750. Can I ask on specific and one general question...1) do you know how many shutter clicks the D500's shutter is rated to last? I looked on their website and did not see it listed. And 2) I am not sure it is worth a whole video...but maybe one day...in general though...say a camera is rated to 100K clicks or something...in your vast experience with tons of bodies and with used gear too...what happens when the clicks go over the recommended life. Do most cameras outlast the click count? Does the shutter eventually fall apart...what really happens...and if anything...can the camera itself still be salvaged. Hopefully this question makes sense. I have a few more thoughts for you Ken! :) I used the D500 in the studio this morning and at a back tie event this evening....1500 images today. The morning shoot was headshots of an older client that has worked with me well over 20 times. I set up my 5X7 triple diffused soft boxes added some huge foam V-flats, set up foam diffusion under the subjects chin, and turned the power right down....very very low contrast light on a white background (try to focus on an eyeball in that environment!). I shot no higher than f 2.8 all morning. I used the 85mm 1.8, 135mm DC, 200 f2, and a few from my 70-200 f2.8. I have NEVER seen that many hits from a wide open shoot! I am throwing out shots that I would have printed because the eyelashes are a little sharper on the next image. On near focus limit images like this with my D810 I expect 1/5 to satisfy my expectations. The actual missed focus count was so low as to be ignored..I had more issues with my clients expression etc. This is new ground! The D810 would have made a slightly nicer files, but instead of almost every image being sharp I would have been working with something like 20% of the images I got with the D500...Think about that for a moment.....I still can't believe it. I know many will scoff at this, but time will prove these fact right! My second shoot was a black tie on a dark background...base exposure for the scene was ISO 6400 1/200 f 2.8. Focus would be a nightmare with any other previous generation Nikon Camera. The D5 nailed focus without issue, but the D500 was less visually intrusive so it got the nod...Very few misses! What amazes my about the low ISO images of the D500 is the way it renders those files! Beautiful! The look is very special...The more I shoot the more I see that. The headshots are also very special....I am still in shock and it is only day 2!! A lovely crispy render that absolutely jumps to adjustments. My retoucher is raving as well...and nothing makes that bitch happy! :)

+Smokin07ram I'm a little puzzled by this. How are you suggesting such a low hit rate on the d810. It's not the new hotness any more but it also has incredible AF and is definitely no slouch. D810 is difficult to handle for sure, due to the high resolution, but manageable in the right hands. I see the D500 as a primary action camera, and a perfect secondary body to a D810.

Take a D810 a 135mm set it to f2, move in to close focus distance, then set up super low contrast lighting...How many razor sharp images will you get? My extensive professional experience says 1 in 5. I have not counted, but I have well over 300,000 images on a D8 series body. The D500 hit rate in that environment is close to 100%...That is unheard of! Not saying it is a better portrait camera, but I am saying it is a better portrait camera in that environment! And a better camera in every other difficult environment. I own multiples of most every relevant Nikon camera and at least one of every other...I understand what works and where.

+Tony Edwards The 7XXX series starting from 7100 doesn't have an AA filter either. While the pixel pitch is is bigger on the d500 compared to the the 7XXX series, it's smaller then the d810 pixel pitch. So I am going to say the IQ is somewhere between d7XXX and d8XX in iso 100 conditions.

The D750 was a bummer with 2 recalls from Nikon with flare/flash sync issues. And I happen to have it. The D600 has dust/oil issues, the D800/D800E have left AF issues, the SB900 has overheating issues. The Nikon QC has been on vacation for way too long. I won't even call D5 a failure. Its upgrade over the past model may not be impressive, but as long as it does not have QC problem it's fine to me.

You obviously haven't spent a long time with the D750. It shares very little with the D610/D600. It has a completely new body, different autofocus system, different button layout, and the list continues.

The auto-focus system alone puts it in a different league. My observation is that it more consistently captures tack sharp images in challenging lighting situations.

The relevant question is, does the D750 outperform the D600/D610 in every quantifiable and observable way. Yes, yes it does. I would say the ability of the D750 to maintain color accuracy at high ISOs is similar to the D4s.

It's the SAME AF module as in the D5, yet you said the D5 AF sucked.... maybe you had a lemon there?

you dont understand, but i explained that on other vids. SAME AF module, however the far right and left of the FF sensor dont have the same coverage on the D5, ergo worse AF tracking.

Oh, I see. Fair enough, but that is true for any FF camera. Even the D7100 has better AF coverage than a D3/4/5. I thought you were talking about AF hunting on your D5 review, which I thought was odd. I know the DR on the D5 was disappointing, but by all (other) accounts the D5 AF is excellent.

D7100 is ages removed from the D3 D5 also has an AA filter, which makes the images look 15% crappier than the D500 D5 is a high dollar LOSER

If d500 is legend why d5 is so bad? i Matt Grange was saying that autofocus is d5 is the same accurate as in d500 and d5 is quicker then d500. second question is what is quite important (for me) the autofucus accurate and speed. Speed of taking photo and buffer - this two point i think is the most important in photo of wildlife and events. this two fact is shared on this two camera d5 and d500. ok, d500 have more spread autofocus points but this is a new construction and if in d500 is good why i d5 is bad (if some say is quicker, even if is not and is the same)?

OLPF have a lots good cameras. Most photos without AA are sharper but many have a problem with some specific pattern. the autofocus accuracy,speed and spread make more for a good camera them aa filter(which, 80% camera on the current market have). i think that d500 i so lovely camera is fact that is great design (copy of d5 :)) with great autofocus, with good sensor, fast frame rate, new mechanism of mirror and insane buffer.
