It’s funny hearing that “mirrorless is the future and DSLRs are dead” comments everywhere, yet Steve uses DSLRs more often than not and gets some of the greatest shots I’ve seen in terms of wildlife. Definitely one of my favorite channels and photographers. Always reminds me that my D500 is still an absolute beast of a camera and the “upgrade” to a mirrorless isn’t necessary yet.
@vaibhavpisal4 жыл бұрын
for wildlife, it could be a downgrade due to viewfinder lag.
@avinashrai111414 жыл бұрын
Mirrorless vs DSLR is just unnecessary war. Mirrorless has its own advantage and same time dslrs are superior in many ways. From a technical stand point there is nothing a mirrorless camera can do that dslrs cant but mirrorless cameras cant have TTL optical viewfinder. This is hardcore fact...
@CS904 жыл бұрын
I use a mirrorless camera and couldn't agree more. People can't seem to accept that both have their advantages.
@tc69124 жыл бұрын
I agree as well and love my D500, 500PF combo for birds. I will be going full frame in the near future and I hope Nikon evolves enough into the mirrorless technology to stick with Nikon. C'mon Z7s. It's unbelievable that they can make a mechanical mirror/shutter mechanism that can slap 14 times per second, 400,000 times accurately to 1/8000 seconds. I think in the long run, mirrorless will be it. Once the R&D is out of the way, the mirrorless camera has to be less expensive to make.
@vaibhavpisal4 жыл бұрын
@@tc6912 no way nikon mirrorless af will catch up with sony/canon. Nikon is leader in ovf af and has consistently developed it. Canon is working excvlusively on evf af and their ovf af is dormant for 5yrs. Even on 1dx iii, liveview beats ovf af. While nikon never made good live view before z6-7. As for mirrorless r&d, its held back by processing power. As processors improve, so will evf resolution and refresh rate will improve. Which will eat processing power. Around 10 yrs before we get completely lag free evfs for bif. For other subjects its fine.

It is refreshing to hear a wildlife pro give this camera a real review. The D6 has gotten a lot of bad press by people who don't know who this camera was designed for: the professional sports and wildlife photographers. I owned a D5 so I have an idea what this camera is capable of. I can't justify the cost of the D6 for my needs so I am looking at the upcoming Z6s instead. You mentioned Theodore Rossevelt NP. My wife and I visited the north and south units and it was outstanding! Most photographers have never heard of this national treasure.

Another great review Steve. So refreshing to see a true real world review and not just someone renting the D6 for a week and thinking that it warrants a true review of the camera. Having just upgraded to the D6 from a D4s, I agree with everything that that you said about the Auto Focus system and the customisation of the D6. It represents a massive upgrade from the D4s. Keep the videos coming Steve they are both informative and a great source of improving techniques.

This was a highly anticipated and highly needed review as unfortunately there really is not a reliable review out there yet, so thanks Steve. I decided to return my NPS priority gotten Nikon D6 and just bought a second D5 used. Although I do quite bit of wildlife photography my main job is photojournalism and for my needs the D6 was just not enough of an upgrade to justify the $2000+ it would cost over a used D5. I took the money that I saved when buying a second D5 after returning the D6 and bought a new 70-200mm f2.8E FL, which I think will serve me much better than the minor upgrades the D6 had. I myself like Steve think the D6 is in fact a better version of the D5 and it's certainly more customizable but I found absolutely no image quality upgrades and very little AF advantages. I do use the horizontal Group line option for certain sports and the D5 already has that option and although the extra 15 or so options the D6 has is cool, I'm not sure how valuable they would be to me. I think for the vast majority of D5 users out there I would recommend you save the money or use the money it would cost to upgrade instead on glass or lighting, etc. If there is a few features that make it worthwhile as an upgrade than I'm sure most of you have already ordered or have in hand a D6. For me the only thing that I really am missing is the SnapBridge wifi and bluetooth ability to send images to my phone or tablet while out in the field. However I also have a D500 that I use from time to time as teleconverter replacement or second camera, that I can use to achieve SnapBridge, since my D5 bodies are both XQD I just put the cards in the D500! It's not as good as having in there camera and I do miss that about the D6 no doubt, but it's not worth $2000+ in my opinion. I know about the WT-6 or WT-5a as I do use those sometimes for big sporting events, but those don't work with SnapBridge and sometimes are difficult to setup unless your an IT person lol. This was a fantastic and honest review that I think most people will benefit from for sure, so thanks again Steve for all the hard work and for putting out the best D6 review so far! I think it's going to be hard to beat this review, but I do look forward to Photography Life's review as they always do a fantastic job like Steve does. It's unfortunate though that both photography life and Steve have yet to review the D5 and it's probably later and never there. If the D6 offered better dynamic range like I was hoping it would, that alone would have made it worth upgrading to, but for me the differences just were not there. Having said all of that though I do plan on upgrading to and owning at least one D6 in the future. I held off on the D5 for years as I loved my D4s bodies and didn't see a need, but now I love the D5 so much that I'm the happiest I've ever been. A lot of that though has to do with glass I now own, which is a 16-35 f4VR, 24-70mm VR, 70-200mm FL and 400mm f2.8E FL with TC-14E III. Those lenses along with the D500 option that I have as a backup and the TC-14E III have me covered no matter the situation or lighting conditions. I typically go out with my two D5 bodies, but once in awhile the D500 still really comes in handy.
@patricksmith2553 Жыл бұрын
Yes, I am replying to my own comment, lol. Anyways now that I have been shooting the D6 for past 9 month's, I have now changed my opinion. The D6 is absolutely a phenomenal camera, by far the best autofocusing DSLR of all time. If you can find one for just under $4,000 USD...I would say it's a fair deal. Now that D5 values have leveled off some, the D6 is not quite as expensive as it once was. I originally said it was absolutely a better camera in almost every-way, but I didn't think it was worth $3,500 more at the time. The D5 is probably the better buy for most people, unless you have no plans on mirrorless and prefer flagships... the D6 makes a great choice. Especially as a last DSLR. I've shot both the Canon 1Dx Mark II and III, and while both are awesome in their own right's, neither can compete with the D6 as far as viewfinder autofocus is concerned. In fact I'd say Canon is or was so far behind, that I'd say the 1DX Mark III just about caught up to the D5, which means Canon took about 3-4 years to match the D5's performance. However we all know the Canon cameras make up for these shortcomings by outdoing Nikon in video and live view shooting options. The Canon 1Dx Mark III in particular has quite a few huge advantages related to how great their Dual Pixel AF is. Nikon has improved the D6 live view and video AF, it's better than the D5 and I think better than any Nikon DSLR, outside of the D780, which is basically a Z6 sensor stuck inside a D750 type body. Do to the fact that I am a photojournalist, I have access to both Canon and Nikon gear and I have used both side by side for many years. Almost two decades actually, but it does get old fast, trust me on that. Everything is backwards or different and even for me, it's not the most pleasurable experience shooting two systems at the same time.

@@patricksmith2553I too bought a D6 - but it was the first time I purchased a Nikon flagship body. Since i’m a retired enthusiast I can not about ROI on the kit. So, I don’t sell any gear. So, I now have the D6 and the Z9. The new technology in the Z bodies is pretty amazing. Do you think you’ll jump over to mirrorless? For me it’s all about fun - not results per dollar invested. When I look at photos from the D610, 850, D6, and various Z bodies - they all look great. I guess the point is most all the technology is better than me :)

I quite literally am picking up my D6 a couple of hours from now. Upgrade question was easy for me as I'm moving from the D3 to the D6. Really :) So, the leap is going to be great, and I love my D3. I likely should have simply gone the D850 route but that would have made too much sense, certainly financial sense LOL I also shoot with the Z6 and a D850 decision got delayed by the prospect of a 'pro' mirrorless from Nikon, which a week ago I gave up on and ordered my D6 LOL Love your videos and your guides -- the absence of click baiting, over the top fan boy blather or competitor bashing makes your reviews so refreshing and objective. I recently sold my A7RIV because it was laggy for birding...slow sensor readut speeds vs A9ii, and also a bit too noisy for my tastes. So I was concerned going from 61mpx to 24mpx. You know what? So gad I did...my photos are all in sharp focus now and much cleaner at high ISO. I do not miss the A7RIV resolution. I even use 24mpx for landscape and its still excellent. Clear and concise review. Well done my good Sir...that being said, not enough...it’s just not enough.
Great review Steve. I had to laugh at 37:16 when you talked about black bears and the difficulty in focusing on them. I shoot quite a bit of the Newfoundland breed of dog, in both show environments and for fun, and yes, locking on to a large black fur ball in less than ideal interior light (which any show rings seem to always have) is always a challenge.

Great review Steve. I have been looking for someone to give Nikon a fair shake on this camera and you did it. The uber negativity with no real justification on KZbin is getting rather annoying. Mirrorless is not the end-all-to-be-all. Thanks from a hardcore Nikon D850 owner who wants them to succeed.

This really gave me, for the first time, a good understanding of what the advantages are to the serious pro bodies like the Nikon D(x) series. Thanks!

The depth of your review is stunning. With 6 weeks in-the-field-testing boiled down into a 40-minute fast-talking review, how could anyone have a remaining question? Oh, wait. I have one: Aren't you supposed to NOT get that close to bears? 😲 This video reconfirms that I brought my camera model question 6 months ago to the right expert! Thanks for sharing your expertise. ⭐x5!

it is safe to get close to bears if you bring a big friend along with you - and you never have to be able to outrun the bear - just run faster than your friend - and if you friend turns out to be fast than you - hit him in the knee REALLY hard with your camera

A great review. Thank you Steve. Appreciate your work. I am half way through your Lightroom videos. So easy to understand. Thanks again.

I’m totally with you, as well as concerning the one disappointment: why Nikon didn’t update the sensor to a 20.8 megapixel BSI sensor, delivering exactly that one stop more dynamic range...

Thanks! I would have shown more of the video, but after I got the shot I said some excited things that would make me lose the "G" rating for this video :D

Same here. Perhaps a used D5 now ? ;) We've confirmation (TY Steve) that the D6 is an incremental improvement of the D5. HOWEVER, Canon and its animal eye AF on a mirrorless seems to be the new kid on the block...(and Sony will respond to that)

Haha! I did the same... beginning to end. Testament to Steve's craftsmanship! Plus any chance to see his stills...
