1) Drug manufacture can produce both enantiomers (pair of related chiral molecules), but often only one is needed -- the other is toxic (eg thalidomide)
2) It is time consuming and wasteful to separate the enantiomers after production -- better to only make one of them in the first place!
3) A chiral auxiliary is used to bond temporarily onto the reactant so that only one enantiomer is produced -- this auxiliary is then removed and reused.
