Yeah, very helpful indeed. I'm in the same boat, just bought one yesterday as well. I think I got quite lucky, paid 200 euro for a 9000 clicks D7100 with a sigma 17-70 2.8 lens. The catch was that everything else was missing, no box, manual, charger, cables, lens covers etc. Just the body, strap, SD card, battery and lens. Still a pretty good deal I think.

I dont understand why every camera out there cant have this kind of review, I think it would really help out beginners/people wanting to know exactly what a certain camera can do. You would think the manufacturers would want to have this kind thing out there because nobody wants to read the manual anyway. New trend maybe? Keep up the good work matt!

Just bought the D7200 virtually the same set up so your Video on the D7100 was worth watching. In fact ive watched it 3 times now just to get used to the features and menu's . I chose the 7200 over the 7100 due to the fact of being new to the photography world. Might as well get the ( at the time ) latest gear. Love the new 7200 cant wait to get out in the field with it . Thanks for sharing your knowledge Matt really appreciate it.

Good job on the review. You have a lot of information here. Just rented D800E, D610 and D7100. Tried this D7100 first. And at the end of the week, I am buying a D7100 with grip. I love this camera and the price has a lot to do with that. Clean files, no AA filter, extra reach with 1.3! And I love that quite shutter. Beautiful!

Can I just say, without hating or anything, that Active D-Lighting does change raw files? It does so indirectly. When the camera detects many bright parts in the picture; in A mode it increases the shutter speed - to bring the brights down to the recognizable values. That darkens the raw files, which means more noise in the shadows. In S mode it closes the aperture a little bit, but nobody uses that! Thanks for the video.

Two gripes with the 7100, I came to this body from a D200, and two things I wish were different, 1. dedicated ISO button on top of camera rather than behind the camera, 2. Display ISO & Frames remaining together on top LCD display. Granted the top LCD on the 7100 is smaller, but would have been nice.

I have the opposite exposure adjustment with Active D on my 7100. It will either lower the shutter to bring out detail in dark places or, if you have Auto ISO turned on, it will leave the shutter the same but increase the ISO to bring out detail. I'm not seeing it make adjustments for bright spots. So... yes, Active D does affect the RAW file indirectly because it changes the exposure triangle (without really telling you)... but, no, it doesn't record any JPEG adjustment tricks to the RAW file.

1.3x crop mode give you more reach zoom range, for example: you have 35mm lens on DX (1.5x crop) format it mean 35mm x 1.5 ~= 50mm, on 1.3x crop mode -> 35mm x 1.5 x 1.3 ~= 70mm. And you have 7fps continuous shooting but your image side will down to 18mp instead 24mp on DX mode. sr my english.

Peta Ferris In my humble opinion, the only shooting mode that allows you FULL control over all the settings is the manual (M) one: maybe you should try to rotate the shooting mode dial to M. I hope this is of help. Good light and the best of luck!

hey Matt thanks for your videos, very helpful. I just bought a d7100 and I find it very satisfying for now as a beginner.. I would appreciate your suggestion regarding buying lenses. I'm considering a prime lens as my first lens outside the kit one. What do you recomend in general for DX crop cameras? To buy a DX lens or go for a FX lens? I heard that in some cases you might get better results with a DX lens than FX on a DX body and generally for much less money. What is your opinion on this? Also which lens you think is the best for the d7100 from these (nikkor 85mm 1.4G, nikkor 85mm 1.8G, nikkor 50mm 1.4D, nikkor 50mm 1.4G or nikkor 50mm 1.8G).. also some other lenses like Sigma, Tokina or Tamron are an option.. thanks
