Mr JPay you’ve most certainly got INFINITE staying power with this D9 venture It is absolutely mind boggelling that you just keep on going and going AND going no matter how deep you’ve gotto dig to get to the most downward roots of the problem (the ‘gunk’ kind of stuff❗️) Taking some pages out of YOUR book THAT’s for certain Its a most commendable one… Touché ‼️👊🔥🥂😎

When I cleaned out the engine block on one of my old D7s I made a long hose nozzle from a plastic sink supply riser. Melt the end completely shut and then drill a 1/8” hole on the end at 90 degrees and you can insert that nozzle down inside the block through the coolant passages and blast any debris out the side access covers. Put a hose cut-off valve in line so that you can manage it. When the water flows your nozzle will whip sideways like crazy. That’s physics.

I remember making special 'tools' to poke through coolers and the like to make sure they were clear, time consuming, but totally essential. I am in the process of cleaning up my tool boxes. They needed a good clean and paint, worthwhile doing every twenty years !

Thanks Mr PayDirt, the makings of a D9H soap opera, hoping for your sake it’s not still going in twenty years, but I’d watch if it is. I haven’t seen seen something splutter and squirt like it was when you were steaming out the radiator since I had my prostate surgery. Cheers from down under.

I want to congratulate you for your persistence and can do attitude, it has gotten me through life but age is catching up with me (72), so I feel your pain. I've done it all, Navy trained mechanic for a state park system, equipment operator for the same, Class A drivers license w/air, welder/fabricator, remodeled homes, boat enthusiast and raised three kids. Arthritis, narrowing of the spine, peripheral neuropathy in my feet, swelling in my legs and age related macular degeneration have slowed me down to outsource even the most mundane tasks. My suggestion is enjoy life while you can Jeff !

I had the privilege of operating that series tractors (D7G, D8K, and D9H) late seventys through the eighties. Enjoyed the 9H's because the ones I ran were almost new and had air conditioners. Finest tractors Cat made IMO.

Watching you take the tank cap bolts out reminded me of something I do. I will go buy the 12 inch x 6 x 6 or similar plastic tubs with snap on caps at wal-mart and use them to put hardware and other small parts in. A piece of freezer tape on the end and a majic marker to label the bins, then they stack! The tubs are in a 10 pack for a few dollars.

Used steel banding material works good for rodding a radiator. Grind one end so it is round, and it’s basically the same thing a radiator shop would use. I really enjoy your channel.

the secret to big projects is to break them up into sections and get them knocked over one by one. When I used to drive Sydney/Perth with road trains.........I broke it up into 4 segments. Each segment was a day, covering over 1000km with a 350 Cummins hooked up to 80,000kg was slow going. Taking that radiator apart was a god send in the long run..........its almost useless all plugged up like that. Ive seen old Cat D-8's engines that idiots ran irrigation water in.....the cylinder liners were caked in mud......complete insanity.

I've seen Dexcool do that when it is mixed with green antifreeze. With smaller radiators I've used vinegar, with good results, to clean the goo out of the radiator, when I can't get the normal citric acid based radiator cleaner. I had to let the vinegar sit overnight for it to work decently. The citric acid I only ran for about a half an hour.

I guess it could be Dex Cool, but I'm pretty sure it would have to be one of the first formulations from the '90s, modern dexcool doesn't seem to do this. Now granted I haven't seen Dex cool mixed with every other coolant on Earth so if there's some kind of chemical reaction that's caused by that, it's a different story.
@Khal036 ай бұрын
Late to the party, but I must say, what you brought up is indeed the most likely problem here. When you mix these modern coolants with the old green style coolant you get a cross between concrete and mud. I was low on coolant in my '94 International 9670 Cabover w/Cummins N14, while on the road and added the modern coolant from the truck stop to it (red coolant). Didn't take long and it was at Cummins in Sikeston Missouri, for some serious troubleshooting and repairs. Lesson learned. A.) Know what coolant you have, and have your own supply to top up if needed. B.) The manufacturers will cost you 10's of thousands of dollars in repairs if you don't pay them for their 'improvements', should you try to cheat. C.) If you have your coolant system completely flushed and rinsed with clean water you can use whichever style of coolant you prefer; green, red, Dex, etc, in this old gear. However, if you have newer vehicles/equipment, they are being engineered with metals and parts that require the components in the newer coolants to not erode/corrode the metals. As such, you must use the manufacturer recommended coolant in their junk. Case in point, Toyota/Lexus has their own coolant, Red; Mercedes has their own coolant, Blue. There is seemingly no end to the different coolants available. Mixing them does not work.

Alot of my tools date back to 1962 when i first started twisten wrenches on my cars , then into being a certified Chrysler Plymouth Tech working on the fun cars of the late sixtys' then into the Ford master tech and there lets go fast cars . The tool collection kept on growing . when i got tired of working on cars and trucks i moved to the easy stuff Farm tractors and did that full time for 30 years and the tools kept adding on . Now semi retired guess what still buying TOOLS . Just when ya think ya havve it all they come out with something new ya just got to have.l

Jeff, I had an old Ford truck that someone put Dexos in and what you have there looks the same, a reddish-brown clay that plugs everything. When I rebuilt the engine the block and all cooling system components were full of that clay and I was told by the machine shop that's what Dexos does when it mixes with another type of antifreeze. I Hate to break it to you so I won't even say it, you are already thinking the same thing, it gets back to the same question you've faced many times, where do you stop? Shame to do all that work just to have the radiator and oil cooler plug up again shortly after start up. Unless you can figure out a way to flush the engine block and maybe run it before putting the Rad back in. I'm really interested in watching the Jeff Wins video on this one.

If that's Dexcool then your coolers are going to be just as plugged. I had a 95 S10 that coolant stuck to everything. I don't think it was ever changed. With your case it looks as though it was mixed with regular coolant. It gels and clogs

@dalton45610 ай бұрын
I'm not sure how much material actually matters, but I wouldn't say it's more made for aluminum to be honest, they've used it in plenty of engines with at least an iron block and there aren't really issues from it.
@knowltek10 ай бұрын
@@dalton456 being from a heavy GM background…dexcool The easiest way to tell the difference between Dex-Cool and regular antifreeze is that Dex-Cool is usually orange/red, and regular antifreeze is green/blue. Dex-Cool is made up of combinations of different phosphates and silicates as well as an organic acid technology that helps minimize corrosion in aluminum engines.
@dalton45610 ай бұрын
@@knowltek I'm familiar the coloration of dexcool versus other coolants, I'm actually a GM technician, although I only have about 3 to 4 years experience. I'm probably not as well versed on coolant formulations as I should be, but now that you say that I do recall reading something about the silicates and oat a while back so that would make sense. Although I always did find it interesting that GM only has dexcool for basically everything, whereas it seems like Ford and Dodge have a myriad of different coolants depending on the model of the vehicle
