I have some pretty ones from Eritrea but they dont have facings around the neck so the stitching doesnt last, one from Nigeria that is beautifully made, then I made myself one out of Nigerian tie dye fabric panels which came out nice with a v-neck in front and back. I'd say it depends how much space you want inside the dress. I saw a shopmade kaftan that said it fitted a 66inch chest, being modelled on what looked like a 34" model. That was a basic rectangular kaftan, not as shaped as this one. Very much like the medieval monks habits, you could just use your own body measurements. You're only restriction is the width of the fabric you choose. These instructions are quoted in Margery Allingham's crime novel "The Tiger In The Smoke": "... [His housekeeper had made him] a robe from the formula laid down in the archives of a thirteenth-century monastery. The directions had been easy to follow: “Of stout black woollen cloth take four equal pieces, each as long as the height of the Brother from nape to heel, and as wide as will stretch across his shoulders from elbow to elbow. Let the first cover his left breast and the second his right, and the third shall cover him behind. Then let the fourth piece be folded into three, and of these the first shall be for his left arm, the second for his right, and the third and last for his head. So shall he be covered and two ells of common rope encompass his middle.” " My mother made me a dressing gown from these instructions, which I still have 40 years later.

@@jaiten5362 most of the woman from one hand to other hand is about 1,5m; so 140cm (the width of the fabric) is enough for the width. When you fold it, it becomes 70cm and this is from your head to hand distance. And the length of fabric, when you fold it you will get your height(except your head). I hope I could help you:)

Try a different fabric first. I use muslin to make patterns with, then sew those pattern pieces together with a basting stitch to easily take apart after.

To me it depends on your height and how long you want it. I am 5’8” or 173 cm and personally I would buy anywhere from 2.75 to 3 metres or 3.0 to 3.3 yards. That is for the longer length or if I haven’t decided which length that I am going to make. I don’t mind having the extra fabric as I can always find something to make with it.
