I have only one Da Vinci in my brush collection and It has lasted me about 20 years at this point and it's still in perfect condition! It's the Da Vinci series 488 Cosmotop Round Spin Quill in size 6. Well worth the price!!!

My all time favourite brush is the Cosmotop round size 8. I have all kinds of more expensive brushes in my collection, but the Cosmotop is the one I reach for the most 😊

Hello. Thank you for this review. I have the quill set of the Casaneo brushes, sizes 0, 2, and 4. For me and my painting style, they don't come to enough of a point and are not very springy. They do hold a lot of water and I generally use them for large washes of color. I have done full pieces with these brushes, but it was difficult for me personally as I tend to be more meticulous and detail oriented. I also cannot speak to any other brushes in the Casaneo line, only these. I would still recommend them as good brushes, just not for my art style - definitely better suited for someone that does organic loose shapes.

Thanks very much for sharing your experience. You might like the Mix B hair quills l. Much more springy and with a very good point.🙏

Great to see these cool brushes in action! Almost all my round brushes are Da Vinci kolinsky sable, but my flat brushes are Casaneo and quite honestly other than the shape it's really hard to tell a difference. I have an old Da Vinci synthetic round, and it's nowhere near as soft and springy as the Casaneos. :)

These are lovely brushes. They seemed to perform well for your painting - which is also lovely. Perhaps you can offer an update after you have used these brushes a bit. Even though they are pricey, if they perform well, then it will be worth purchasing. Thank you for sharing.

They seem great. I've used the cosmo top and liked them well enough though now mostly use escoda's chronos. These are tempting though I must say. Lovely painting too!

I love the da Vinci maestro series 10 and 35 and the inlaid liner that it a maestro also I use a size 4 which the needle is Sable and the outer shorter hair is kazan squirell so talk about water retention. And it held up with every single mark making experiment I tried including my signature. I'm so impressed by maestro brushes. And I did not care for the caseneo line. I tried a size 8 and found it a but bushy and it didn't have a sharp point. I also own about 6 sizes in the cosmotop spin, they are sharp and snappy as heck but the water retention is a bit meh for watercolor but they're fantastic for gouache. They're kind of similar to a Princeton velvet touch but just a tinge stiffer but although they might be sharper I still prefer the velvet touch long rounds and I believe the velvet touch holds a bit more water. But my ultimate favorite all synthetic brushes are Princeton aqua elite and my favorite hybrid brush is silver black velvet. Very soft and holds a ton of water. Maybe more than size 2 quill compare to they're size 10.

Thank you very much for the excellent review of the brushes with a tutorial included, which seemed easy to follow for a beginner since you showed every step. I am considering buying the brushes and would be nice to try them out with your tutorial. I do find that it is totally a deal breaker that the free lesson they included is in German. I have no intention of learning German at this point and do not understand how for an international selling brush they have thought it was a good idea to not have it in English or at least with English subtitles. Since this review is nearly half a year old, does anybody know if they have corrected this?

I got a set of davinci caseneo 0,1,2,3,4 real sable and love them. They hold a point very well and the point stays unlike synthetic. I must have gotten them during a clearance because the price went up and I wanted to get the larger set but can’t find them for a reasonable price.

I have lots of Da Vinci brushes: Cosmotop Spin are very springy I use them for gouache. For watercolor I use the Maestro Series 35. I really like them but the bigger ones lose their shape even though I take good care of them. I have to comb them with a mascara brush and gum arabic. I also use the Petit Gris squirrel quills, they keep their shape better than the Maestro but they are very floppy. You have to get used to them. A mix of natural and synthetic seems like a very good alternative.

These look very nice and what a great price at Jackson’s! Unfortunately I live in the states and the shipping basically doubles the price so…. I’m a beginner and settled on Princeton Aqua Elites and for not knowing what I don’t know I think they are pretty good brushes. Really intrigued by the liner brush- lots of bare trees in my future and this looks like it would be perfect for those small bare branches.

Thank You Jay for this wonderful review! I clicked your link on Jackson and these are on sale. I bought a box of the Escoda travel set and these will be perfect for me to try without the pricey tag! Mines bday present for me. I can read German they are very direct with their wording. Very similar to Spanish what you get is what you see except German has a neutral gender which it can be refer as this or that or 'it" yes they do give their pronouns to items or people like babies. Just FYI if someone does the course and is not familiar with the language. Maria

Nice review and painting showing the tips of those brushes. I have a handful of DaVinci brushes, and I have to say they are not the ones I reach for. They are not comfortable in my small hands. The Casaneos I have are very blunt, and they lay down strangely streaky. I much prefer the Raphael SoftAqua bristles. The Cosmotop Spin brushes are really stiff, probably the stiffest synthetic I have. The tips are nice on those, though. Dont hold a huge amount of water, but give good dry brush. I even tried a small Maestro, but was disappointed.

Thank you very much for the review. I was interested to see how the liner performs because it looks so funny. Lovely painting as well. I have Cosmotop-Spin 3/0, 4, and 6. The really small one is impressive for details and it can hold a lot of paint for its minisque size. The other 2 feel like sticks with paint on them - they are very stiff, you cannot drag their belly at all as they tend to skip too much, and they don't come to a fine point. Not that good for watercolor, I think. The KUM brushes make a better point, distribute the color better, and have similar springness to them. The downside is, out of the 4 brushes I ordered, 2 came deffect, so I cannot really recommend them either. Casaneo are lovely, they can hold so much water and painting with them feels like melting butter on a hot pan. I really love them, but of course, they are soft brushes, don't have a fine point, and aren't that springy (still better than true squirrel hair, I have read). The Casaneo quill makes a nice point, one needs to simply reajust it when painting.

Hey Jay, thankS for the review! Lovely painting as always. I have to remember to incorporate that one trick you do for skies, using a wash of yellow ochre before adding a blue, it gives a wonderful soft glow! I'm tempted, but Jacksons brush sale already ended. How does this da Vinci quill compare to a Jacksons Raven brush? I have the small mops and i love them a lot. (I remember: i bought a casaneo quill, one of the smallest sizes, just because they're very expensive 😅)

I love the Maestro, but as you say extremely expensive. I find the Mix B in general quite a good compromise (quality-price). And they have Mix B in all possible sizes and forms. The Casaneo are too soft for me. Same as Chris AD has mentioned already. I bought a Colineo brush because, they had announced it as their newest invention to mimic sable, but I was really disappointed. It gives me a real scratchy feeling when painting. BTW I just looked the Mix B for a gift for some friends in the USA up (on a popular low price art supply site), and I couldn’t believe it was exactly double the price from what I would pay at the shop here in Austria/Germany. 😮 Hard to talk about prices, I guess.

Your "liner" brush is shaped a lot like my Winsor & Newton "pointed round" brush, suggested by Chasing The White Rabbit. I like mine. Paints like a round with a handy liner tip. Hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine. I have 3 cosmotop spins. The 1st is a 14-round that I would happily give you if you lived in Montana. Nothing wrong with it, but I have other (smaller) brushes I fell better using... though I should try it again when I get back to painting bigger. Then I have 2 cosmotop spin flat brushes (6 and 8) that I love and use regularly. Deb in Montana, USA
