On September 16th 2017 A.D. we were invited by our friends from the Brotherhood of the Askanier to join them at this year's medieval fair at Ziesar castle in Germania. The mutually felt respect and everyones curiosity about each others sword fighting style lead to an interesting exchange of knowledge amongst warriors from different worlds .. and of course an encounter of our blades.

Krabi Krabong is a weapons-based martial art originating in Thailand. It began with the Siamese military and was used by warriors on the battlefield, often alongside Muay Boran. Warriors fought for survival, thus combat techniques at the time were especially deadly, utilizing spears, swords, knives and arrows. When unarmed, Krabi Krabong employs a variety of strikes, locks, holds, kicks and throws as well. If weapons broke for example, battle would resume using these deadly unarmed techniques. Krabi Krabong is therefore not merely some weapons exhibition, but rather a complete battlefield art teaching principles of deadly combat. It can further be applied to everyday self-defense, using everyday objects as weapons.

A long time ago there used to be gatherings where warriors from many Southeast Asian styles met and shared their experiences in peace and freedom. Everyone brought food and beverages (mostly alcoholic) and neither weapons nor fighting were allowed. What was brought to these events was shared amongst friends and enemies alike, no matter if they had faced or would have to face each other on the battlefield. During these events they were all the same: Just warriors who celebrated being still alive.

There is no right or wrong way, because each and very technique needs to be adapted (not copied) to ones own physique and the more tools you have in your toolbox the better. Being able to switch between„what people expect when they see a tall guy“ to „I have never seen a tall guy moving like that“ can confuse your opponent and make a huge difference in combat.
@muayboran6111
@muayboran6111 3 жыл бұрын
Technically yes, but remember in those days wars were fought in jungles. You have to be agile, so they favored the small to get around for maneuverability. It's not speed they're worried about, if you're shorter and lighter you have access to more space around you. The mongols came to indonesia and vietnam, very big and strong, non of them lasted for very long. So, in the old days, yes that would be a factor in where you are on the battle field, but Siam had a reputation of recruiting foreign fighters

That’s why thais are small, it’s a genetical advatage for that environment. The mongols tried to invade Indonesia, vietnam and myanmar, all attempts failed. Only until the european brought guns but then when they did have guns, america still failed.

*Some facts about Thaiachira* A spin-off of Muay Chaiya, which originated from a student sports group at Ramkhamhaeng University and therefore has nothing to do with old fighting styles, but pretends to make themselves important. The chairman of Thaiachira (Kru Lamp) has no qualification as a teacher (Krob Kru). He has also never fought in a boxing ring. His sword knowledge is based solely on student sports and stage fencing (Krabi Krabong), which is taught at the university. The rest comes from Muay Chaiya, which can also not be called an old or a real Thai martial art. The Muay from the city of Chaiya mainly refers to a certain Ajarn Ket Sriyapai. Ket Sriyapai was the son of a governor who was active in sports promotion and brought Muay Veti fighters (Muay Thai) from Chaiya to Bangkok to promote them there. Ajarn Khet never learned Muay Thai himself. The only reason why he is called "Ajarn" is that he has written and published some (fictional) stories about Muay Thai fighters. Ajarn Ket came from a high-ranking family and therefore never fought in a boxing ring. That would have been inappropriate for his standing. His actual profession was civil servant in the building industry. Later Muay Chaiya generations (for example Ket's school friend Tonglor Yalee) mixed normal Muay Thai techniques with Silat (Indonesia), Wushu (China) and Jiu Jitsu (Japan). For these reasons Muay Chaiya, and everything that comes from this direction, can neither be called an old nor a real Thai martial art. I don't know the full history on the Martial art, myself...but regarding the later point, is there something inherently wrong with mixing Martial Arts from different cultures, into your own...? If you're claiming the fighting style as being an absolute pure and distilled technique from your culture, I could maybe see the issue...but at the same time, I doubt there are very many martial arts our there, historically, that haven't been influenced by other cultures styles. Cultural exchange is a natural and good thing, in my opinion. It's why you see Religions like Buddhism move from India, down the silk road into China, and through most of Eastern Asia. It's why you see Taoist symbols all over say, Korean Flags for example. Philosophy, Food, Clothing, and Technology will naturally be exchanged and shared, with exposure, along with styles of fighting. And this isn't to disregard the rest of what you're saying: whether or not the chairman of that particular institution as fraudulent is unknown to me, as I'm not well educated In the subject, so I won't take a side either way until I personally learn more. To me though, I generally see pretty respectful fighters come from this tradition...even if it isn't one-hundred percent legit. Again, that's my objective opinion, not subjective fact.

@allopez8563
@allopez8563 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the answer. I made the comment for two reasons. The first is that the thai sword looks sharp and the Euro guys movements look somewhat wide and making cutting arcs, most HEMA videos I have seen their movements are sharper and usually end up around 30 cm behind their intended target, so that the cut doesn't trace a wide arc. Longer arcs make it harder to recover the guard. Maybe it is just me but I think it would be very interesting if you show some sparring matches with appropiate sparring tools among comitted martial arts practitioners. It would be even better with bouts using different weapons of both martial arts repertories. I myself praticed chinese martial arts for 16 years, regretfully in my style we only sparred using only sticks and staffs. From swords and other sharp weapons, I learned only forms.
@Pahuyuth
@Pahuyuth 6 жыл бұрын
Your impression is correct. The Thai sword in this video is razor sharp. The whole encounter was unstaged, unscripted and held in an atmosphere of mutual respect, friendship and willingness to learn from each other. Therefore the arcs and movements are relatively wide and controlled in order to avoid injuries. Sparring matches are indeed interesting and entertaining, but I can assure you that even this small technical exchange already lead to the conclusion that it is a good thing for everyone that German knights and Southeast Asian warriors never met on the battlefield. Both styles are great and have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Weather, battle field, and geographical location which they are fighting on is hugely impacted how they fight. On a flat grassland, or in an arena with perfect condition, of course full plate armor will have advantage anyday. However, imagine fighting in a hot, humid weather all year round, not to mention the rain, and sometime fell like walking in the swamp, that amount of armor only wear you down and slow you down over time, couple few swing and you tired. That's why the Thai ditch their armor, and replace them with shields instead. Shield alone would provide huge area protection, without slowing them down too much.
