I'll second that. I've got the CSS326 24 port 1G switch and the CRS309 8 port 10G switch, both have been absolutely faultless from day 1. Really good value for money.

Our company just sprang for AT&T's 5Gb/s fiber with 5 usable public IP addresses. AT&T's BGW320-505 OP router has 3 x GbE and a single 5GbE port. I've successfully connected this port (using cat-6A) to a TP-Link TL-SX105 unmanaged switch that has 5 x 10/5/2.5/1 GbE, auto-negotiating ports. Our UXG-Pro's 10G WAN port (using the UACC-CM-RJ45-MG module) says it's connected at 10G and seems happy. On a good day, with IDS disabled, the UXG-Pro will get 4Gb/s throughput with this setup. With full IDS enabled, it will consistently get +/- 3Gb/s.

My x520 on my pfsense pc would not negotiate dac to my sfp mikrotik switch. I had to use fiber and it figured it out

Hey! I really liked this video! I was learning aobut the subject because I bought a UDM SE and a USW 24 PoE! I connected both devices using 2 RJ45 Transceivers (from ubiquiti) and a cat6 cable. The switch is not the pro version, so I used it's SFP port with the transceiver to connect it to the SFP+ port in the UDM SE. I'm only getting 30Mbs as a download speed when my full download speed is 300Mbs down and 30Mbs up. At the UDM SE and at any of it's ports I'm getting my full WAN download speed but not if I use any of the switch ports. That's not the case for the upload speed, I get the full upload speed both in the switch and UDM SE. I suspect the problem is in the conneciton between devices. Since the 2 ports are not SFP+ but rather SFP to SFP+, I did set the connection manually to be Gbe and not auto negotiation to avoid any problems. Still I don't know why my connection is being capped like that! Could you help me out? Thanks!

Hey Tom, I am looking for a mentor but when I check people's work experience on Linkedin or on their website I don't really know if it is fake or not, how can I know if it is fake? it's going for a month that I am stuck in this appreciate it if you answer me.

I'm in this boat, I have 2.5Gb fiber connected directly to my USW-Pro-24-PoE, then to pfsense over Gigabit Ethernet and back again. My issue is my upload speeds are stuck at 110Mb on wired clients. This is only strange because my wireless clients (u6-lr's) Ethernet backhauled to the same switch get approximately 300Mb/300mbit. So they're all wired! Why can my wireless clients get better upload than my wired machines? I've checked and swapped out cables, cards, used different pfsense interfaces.

I just found a 2.5GBASE-T SFP Transceiver Module that claims to use a regular SFP port and can run at 2.5g over 100m of Cat5e. Is that compatible with any non-vendor specific switch SFP port? I assumed that SFP was capped at 1gb but learned that it up to 4.5gb in some configurations. I'm trying to figure out if I can use these on my network switches SFP ports.
@JoeDuarteScientist3 жыл бұрын
Very clear video, Tom. By the way, why would one use those SFP+ to RJ45 converter modules? I've always been puzzled by those. Especially if we're talking within the same rack or closet, since passive 10G DAC cables are good for 7 - 10 meters if they wanted to stick with copper for some reason. Why bother converting formats? Those modules just generate lots of heat and waste energy, and add latency. I could see it if you had a long run of Cat6a coming into a closet, and needed to plug into an SFP+ port for some reason, but it would be better to just get gear with 10GBase-T RJ45 ports. For the short in-rack connections, I don't understand the point.
@Quilla9993 жыл бұрын
Maybe because some Datacenters get switches with ony SFP+ ports there might be another reason why but im not to sure or and im sure some people use CAT 6 cables instead of fiber or DAC cables.
@EricLopushansky3 жыл бұрын
Like most adapters, the reason it exists is for those who did not plan what they needed ahead of time. If you only have a free SFP port and you need to plug in a cat 6 cable to it, an adapter is likely cheaper than buying a whole new switch.

As a practical example, a switch in the school I work at was in an area that was never expected to have more than 24 copper ports being used but thanks to an unexpected growth in CCTV cameras on the network, the switch got filled up. Having the SFP+ ports gives me that little bit of breathing room to plug in 3 more connections without needing to jump to a 48 port switch.

@rjy89603 жыл бұрын
I have my CRS309 8 port 10G Mikrotik switch connected to a Mellanox MT26448 card over SFP+ fibre modules. The Mellanox card I have will link up at 10G but sometimes the card itself won't come up, so I have to wait about 20 seconds or so between boots. It's done this in two machines and I've never figured out why - the machine is running Linux Mint. It seems like it's a reset issue. But yes, it will work and link at 10Gbps.
@Zizzily3 жыл бұрын
My Mikrotik isn't picky about SFP+ brands in my experience. It shouldn't matter who makes the NIC at all. I have three Mellanox ConnectX-3 NICs with Mellanox MFM1T02A-SR SFP+s on my CRS305-1G+4S+ switch with no issues.
@jcnash023 жыл бұрын
When we talk about SFP compatibility, it’s more about SFP vs SFP+ than it is 1G vs 10G. The difference is the amount of power the switch can provide to the module.

Im so tierd of all theese compability reuqirements. It's a full-time job to secure oneself and configure pfsense and maintain a net. Pfsense is a big time time thief, periode! In the other end of the story is to get the infrastructure up working properly... Make sure to avoid RFI/crosstalk, implementations and separations etc. In a modern house with low and high voltage all over, RJ45 copper is downright anachronistic and no go. Does not help if its a cat6a sheild outdoor or cat7 better, that RF and crosstalk will kill your ethernet coms eather way... Fixing that going fibre someone says...., expensive termination tools is a must after you have digged that cableway 25-30 meters through the garden, blown the damn fiber cable forward to its enpoint and then starts the entry trough walls and termination of endpoints. If you have the time, go for it! it's all very well, but this quickly becomes more expensive and more than a hobby this road instead of just simply paying a contractor to do the job at a fixed price A-Z..
