Fun fact about Oh Comely: Jeff recorded the entire song in one take, and you can actually hear someone else in the studio yell "Holy shit!" at the end.

I fully agree on holland 1945. The last verse where he says: ''And here's where your mother sleeps And here is the room where your brothers were born Indentions in the sheets Where their bodies once moved but don't move anymore'' Makes it feel emotional despite being an explosive fast paced track

This album was kind of the gateway to the left field indie folk explosion of the early to late 2000s

Anne Frank is a big theme on this album. Thats also why one song is called Holland, 1945 where she hid during the german occupation.

Others have mentioned Anne Frank already but she's definitely a major theme throughout the record. Jeff Mangum, to me, had some sort of parasocial relationship with her where he imagined going back in time and rescuing her and having some relationship with her and saving her from the horrors of war, but in thinking about that it seems to me like there are so many really personal associations about adolescence and childhood trauma that he just puts right out there for us to see. It's very dense and I think anyone claiming to understand every reference is delusional, but the reason it speaks to me and probably so many others is that, as quirky as the Anne Frank focus is, it's kind of beautiful and endearing and sympathetic in ways that many of us wouldn't like to admit, especially not in such a public venue as writing an entire album full of this stuff and putting it out there for all the world to see. It feels personal in a way very little music truly does.

I am blown away that you would listen to such a unique/niche album for the first time.. while being recorded. 😮 I am about 20 yr older than you but we have similar taste. I found this band because one of the members was associated with another group that I was in love with at that time. Someone in my college photo class handed me and CD and said you will like this. That band was called Beirut and I HIGHLY recommend it to you. Skim through a few songs on the first two albums and see what you think. 🙏🏼 😅

This album has been One of the biggest influences in my personal music. It also room lights me a lot of Neil Young's self-titled album I think came out in 1970. Good call on doing the microphones the glow part 2 soon, there's definitely a line connecting these two albums. Got their albums I'd recommend are death cab for cutie's Transatlanticism, The decemberists's the crane wife (there might be a lot of debate on this one but this is my personal favorite decemberists album. I love the progginess of it) the arcade fire's funeral, and if you like the noisy low-fi vibe of it Bright Eyes' Fever and Mirrors and/or Lifted.

If you like this sort of music you should check out the album "Black Sheep Boy" by Okkervil River ... a lot of people point to it as kindred spirit to Neutral Milk Hotel and they have a lot of similarly intense visually poetic lyrics.

I always took the line 'semen stains the mountain tops' to represent something pure being tainted, much like the seaweed in the water. It's not too much of a stretch given the masturbatory line that followed. I think some of the word choices in that one were purely due to how the words sound, rather than particular meaning.
