She said that it had been there a long time, only but the grace if God that allowed her to leave and go back to the courthouse and finish her business for the day. Forgetting that you had ammunition in your bag from a previous recreational gun trip should not mean that you go to prison for 12 years. Should you check your bags to make sure there is nothing in them when you travel internationally? Yes. However, mistakes happen. I searched through all of the comments here and everyone seems to have missed the point of this charade. Turks and Caicos is a British Overseas Territory, not an independent country. Some low level bureaucrats in T & C either got too full of their own limited authority or were actually working a scam. So our diplomats in the State Department talked to their counterparts in London and it all was settled. Officials in T & C received phone calls from London outlining the possible adverse consequences for their futures, the judge was put on alert, and now all is well!

No they don’t - most of the world don’t own guns, want them or need them. Americans think their right apply everywhere and they don’t. The world doesn’t have to adjust their laws for Americans- if you are going to another Country at least respect their laws.
