My father used to tell the story of when he and Mom were dating, they saw a skunk on the side of the road with a large glass mayonaise jar stuck on its head. Mom insisted he stop the car, and she slowly walked over to the skunk, gently talking to it. She tried to pull the skunk's head out of the jar, but she couldn't get it out. So, she picked up a rock and smashed the jar, freeing the skunk. The skunk never sprayed her... just happily trotted away! P.S. - My parents were married for over 50 years before they passed on...

@@Oldmane-420This can't even be true as they contort their body so that they're facing you and have their butt pointed at you at the same time, when they spray. So, in this position, their feet aren't on the ground. However, maybe there's still some general truth to what you've said. Such as, maybe they have to start this process with their feet on the ground as kicking up into this position is somehow needed to spray?

Skunks are great! I had an old tree stump where hornets made a nest in. I asked people how to get rid of them…one said pour gasoline down the hole light it on fire. No way was I going to do that and risk burning the neighbor’s or my property. Literally the next day I saw what looked like dirt and dead tree debris around where the stump had been. I inspected the area for any signs of hornets or nest…NOTHING!! Our neighborhood skunk came “grubbing” during the night and feasted on the hornets nest. Love that skunk!❤😊

Probably 10 or 12 years ago my wife who is allergic to bees decided to try to cut the grass in a badly overgrown area while I was at work on the weekend. I came home to her suffering a bad allergic reaction from stings from a hornet's nest built on the ground in tall weeds. She ran RIGHT OVER it with the mower. It wasn't damaged because it was in a dip in the ground. It started raining, and the next day, I went out to look at the nest and see if I could destroy it but a skunk had done the work for me overnight and completely eradicated the nest. Less than 2 years ago the same thing happened at my mother's house who had a hole full of yellow jackets. By the time I got over there, she told me they kept seeing an animal digging in that area. She didn't know what it was but I assume it was a skunk. It had demolished the nest, saving me the trouble. They love the larvae and apparently aren't affected by the stings. I guess their fur protects them.

They gave me great advice. Keep the bird warm, which I did in a paper towel stuffed little plastic wide container, then when I release, place the bird in a nest of leaves for warmth which I did. I watched the tiny bird fly about a foot away and perch on my next door neighbors chain link fence, the sparrow turned around to face me as of to say thank you for warming me I was freezing, and flew away. The bird could’ve just flown away perching nowhere. I had a high the rest of that day helping that bird.

I found a little yellow finch on my back deck one day in the heat. He was so bad off I could just walk up to him and pick him up. I put him in a shoebox and carried him inside to cool off, I put a little dish of water in with him. After a few minutes I put the lid on (with some holes) so it’d be dark and he could rest. I went to check on him about 1/2 an hour later and he flew out of the box😅 now I had a fully recovered bird flying around my living room! It took me another half hour to catch him, I was almost in a panic because I wanted to catch him before anyone else came home and found out how stupid I was.

For future reference. She went about it backwards. You get a tarp, or sufficiently robust (thick) clear plastic. Think shower curtain, but larger. IMPORTANT!: The reason they told you not to pull it out if it was a skunk is just as much for the skunk's sake. This situation may have turned out ok, but it should have been handled by a professional. Skunks should NEVER be picked up by their tail. Doing so can cause their tail to de-glove. That means all the skin separates off the tail vertebrae, which is an injury that would kill the skunk anyway.
