I just want to say, Mak, that you really don't have to worry about not talking as much as Alayna and Ashley. I can totally relate to being quiet in a group and typically speaking more in a one on one conversation as well. I find it kind of rude, that people seem to point that out so much. It's nice to see you try to be more active, as long as it makes you feel comfortable. I really love all three of you running the podcast and am excited for every new episode. Was lovely to see Sydnie as well! Hope Ashley is doing better ❤

I agree I find it rude for someone to point out who is more quiet… like I don’t go around saying “wow you’re LOUD” to people that don’t stop talking.

26:55 The reasoning I feel is "because it's unfair". To explain, these old people lived a certain way, not by choice but because they "had to". They accepted that as a fact in order to make it easier to live, and that normalized their and everybody else's suffering. Suddenly, things "don't have to be" as bad; that's bs for them, "what do you mean all my pain and suffering was for nothing?", and instead of coming to terms with the fact that the way society works isn't set in stone and they could have changed things, they go for the easier path of resenting the new generation for how "easy" they have it compared to them. It's easier to be angry than to be sorry for yourself and all of those around you. Especially when you're so out of touch and the belief system that helped you survive comes crashing down under the present.

The only people I know who genuinely and lovingly called their mom “mother” is my nana and my great aunt. My nana was born in the 40s and great aunt was probably born in the late 30s, so I attribute it to that. Nowadays, I only hear people my age or within a few decades of my age say “mother” when they don’t like their own mom and want to distance themselves from them.

Some advice about the out of state tuition thing Mac. I am no expert but when we researched that for my sister and having her move permanently to the state I live in (Oregon) so she could get instate tuition we found out some info that you might want to know. Basically if you move to a state and start school b4 that 1 year mark, it’s really hard to get instate even once you have been there for a year. I think it’s cause they want to prevent people from claiming in state after freshman year, because then all kids who stayed in state for the summer would then qualify. We were told by her school if she wanted in state she should just come live with me for a year first then, start school and the process would be easier. Not sure if this helps but just keep in mind if you planned thinking paying out of state for one year and then instate after, just talk to the college financial aid office to confirm they will let that happen.

Mak. You're on track. You're doing well. Relax please. Stop judging yourself. Life is a rollercoaster though. One day you can feel like your on top of the world and the next you're totally defeated. It's your ability to jump back up and start again that gives you character and strength. Just enjoy the ride and don't over think. Worrying about tomorrow just zaps the joy from today

In case anyone needs/wants Mak's tuition math at $46 per credit hour and 18 credit semester (witch is a maxed out semester) is $828 per semester which is dirt cheap for the US. With out of sate/non resident tuition $352 per credit hour it comes out to $6,336 which is expensive for community college but cheaper than most in state tuition for a state university. For non us people in the US we have community colleges (most accessible), state colleges/universities, and Private Colleges/ Universities. The difference between a college and university in the states is the number of gradute programs they have.

I relate to Alayna so hard. I definitely did a lot of my studying trying to only read for the class and not for my genuine interest in the subject that also existed. I wish I had been more there, even though I did already learn a lot and socially, the difference between undergrad and grad school was also huge, in a good way. Maybe I should pursue a PhD and do it right that time. Or I guess closer to right, no point being perfectionist here either.

Hi Alayna, I'm also studying counselling as a mature aged student, but in Australia, I'd love to hear what the Canadian degree is like as an overall summary, because over here we have so many umbrella Degrees within phycology and counselling is technically it's own practice here. Also I'm in an undergrad which I realise is a significant difference between the degrees.

On the subject of 'kids have it easy nowadays'. That's that point, right? Things are supposed to get better as the generations go on. A good quote I heard recently, paraphrased - "I must study politics and war, that our sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy ... in order to give their children a right to study painting, poetry, music" Things are supposed to be easier for future generations, otherwise your generation did a shitty job.
