Also an addict. It's nice to hear someone talk about it, but not just in a group meeting sort of way. His creativity is what helps make his message shine through. Like, when he talks about still being drunk from last night and getting a bloody mary-yeah, I get it, and I'd hear that in a meeting. But "Everybody says, 'You got a lot to be proud of.' Been high this whole time, don't realize what I've done," is such a relatable line that I don't hear as often. There are more and better examples, but you get my point. And then, the dark thoughts, the moments you give yourself away and say, "fuck it..." I feel all of this is embodied in the instrumentation. I always liked weird music, but after becoming an addict, that sharp, abrasive music... idk, drowns out(?) or something, it feels like a cop-out. There's comfort in the chaos. For those reasons, this will be an all-time favorite album for me.

Fun Fact: the name Atrocity Exhibition is a reference to a Joy Division song of the same name. I remember reading an interview with Danny before the release of this album and maybe even before the release of the previous album Old where he mentioned he loved Joy Division. The line “this is the way step inside” on Gold Dust is another reference to the Joy Division track.

@@josiahb3n4That’s kind of the point. That’s what makes it art. There’s a reason it’s called Atrocity Exhibition as it musically provokes mental health issues, coping, and excessive drug use. Drug addiction I imagine is not fun and the album serves either as a cautionary tale or therapy for those struggling. It’s not your typical "casual listening album", but rather a deep dive into a person’s messed up state of mind. Despite dark themes and experimental sound, he’s still able to flow well to various trippy grooves of high budget samples and instrumentation making it still work for the listener to explore through this piece. This is an instance were industrial rap is essential to hip hop and music overall. Also "Really Doe" has got to be a banger I mean come on lol.

A great breakdown. I was not expecting your dad to be so cool. Danny has said this was his first ever album with a big budget(100k) from the label and he spent 70k on his samples but then another 50 on mixing and mastering. He can't do anything until the money's been recouped. Danny is for sure a one of a kind artist, the voice pitch changes with his punch lines just mesh perfectly.

One of the greatest rap albums of all time for me personally. Once you’ve had to depend on any kind of substance to just get through the day, or had one too many bad trips this album becomes so painfully real. Probably the best depiction of addiction and how it tears you and the people you love apart.
@untitled45252 жыл бұрын
This album i would say is the music equivalent of requiem for a dream. Just hitting you with over stimulation showing you horrors of addiction. Leaving you blown away by the execution and message. Making you never want to try an substance. I’d love to see y’all’s take on Jpeg or rtj, but what ever y’all do I’ll watch. Appreciate all the work you do.
@xanderreimers44452 жыл бұрын
This album always hit hard for me, and I could relate to a lot of the issues of mental health on this album, but after dealing with drug addiction personally this album hits even harder. It’s like almost too relatable from the first few lines. It’s hard for me to listen to know because I feel everything he’s saying deep in my soul. I remember the cabin fever of being stuck in my room for a couple days but being to paranoid to leave it. Staying up for days snorting coke, meth and god knows what. People watching me spiral thinking I was just some fun party guy but i started depending on these drugs to form basic functions. Just like ain’t it funny, everyone was watching me spiral but not realizing or caring how serious it was. Dude those times were rough. I’m only 21, and thankfully I’ve been able to get past that and im not in the depths of addiction any more. But goddamn does this album portray those experiences so well.
