I Got a Story to Tell sums up Biggie’s greatness to me. When you hear the 2nd half of it (when he’s telling the story to the homies), you can imagine that exact conversation between you and the fellas at a barbershop or in the man cave, full of the same attitude and embellishments that we all do when describing our adventures. Then, listen to the first half and think how hard it would be to “sing” one of your own stories, with occasional rhymes, but always keeping your flow ‘in the pocket’. The man was simply one of the best ever at telling a story, while a movie of what he’s saying plays in the listener’s head.
@Cdubman0072 жыл бұрын
I, like your dad, prefer LAD over RTD; much like I prefer Nas’ It Was Written over Illmatic. Wonder if he’ll be the same(?)
@DarkSunRidah672 жыл бұрын
If you think about it he told the story twice. Once in rap form, then the repeating of the tale to the homies & summing up the whole tale in less than 30seconds. GENIOUS !!!

He didn’t like the first album because of the order in which you’re playing these albums. If he listens to “Good Kid Mad City” or “To Pimp a Butterfly” or The Marshall Mathers LP before Ready 2 Die, it will give the appearance of a step down in terms of overall production. It’s classic NY 90s loops and fire at that time. So its no surprise that he wasn’t impressed with the first. But this album, was his masterpiece. Let’s see how he feels about this one! Lol

I didn’t grow up in 90s but I still think the production on RTD. is great

@@dallasd214M same, I think the reason why the dad didn't like rtd was because he thought Biggie was an average rapper before listening to much of his work and those thoughts blinded him

@@MouseR985 but even on RTD his rapping is legit flawless
@MouseR9852 жыл бұрын
@@dallasd214M I agree, I think it was better than LAD because you could hear the hunger in his voice, but I imagine the dad didn't even pay attention too much to the lyrics because he thought there was no reason to do so. I mean, look at his reaction after listening to suicidal thoughts. It's pretty clear he didn't look too deep into the lyrics. It's great to see he started paying a lot more attention now with LAD. I think they should revisit RTD after this, I'm sure the dad will like it a lot more now that he got over this Biggie hate phase

Btw. In Kick in the Door, in addition to the rappers you mentioned, like NAS, he was also talking about Jeru Da Damaja. When he says “son, I’m surprised you run with them” he was actually talking to DJ Premier. Preemo was Jeru’s producer and down with his crew The Gangstarr Foundation. Also, Preemo said he was ready to fight BIG and everybody in the studio when that song was recorded. Lol

Hm- Jay-Z was a big influence on Biggie too; he looked up to Jay business wise as Jay was his own boss/with an impressive mind and street wise as he had more bonafides and he started to not write his lyrics, because of Jay; even Little Cease say's that Biggie thought he was better than him and that checks out with a lot of other stories. I think one of the best way's to get a picture of Biggie's fondness for Jay is too look at his final rap city interview where at the end of it Jay-Z is the only person he shouts out by name besides his children at the very end. "Playboy Jay-Z, Jiggaaaa..." Also he calls him his "Ace Boon Coon" which pretty much means bestie on this album. Amongst many other evidence of their bond. But ye- Jay also did learn a lot from Biggie, but stylistically at least in their writing style/literary techniques and flow they're more different than people give credit to. They were gonna make the commission too.

The hook to Hypnotize comes from the Slick Rick track La Di Da Di. The fact that Big borrowed from early hip hop and now guys like Pusha T or Conway The Machine borrow from him, the original spirit of hip hop can still be felt today quite heavily if you know what to listen to.
