At 15, my daughter sang this song to me, for my birthday present. She couldn't afford a present, but her singing this song was the most valuable gift I have ever gotten. We lived a hard life, and I was hard on her; not mean, not cruel, but never sugar coating life, or her need to be able to take care of herself without anyone to depend on. Now that she has a family of her own, the reality of the meaning in this song and how I chose to raise her, has come home. Tonight I played this song for her, after she was doing some karaoke with my grandchildren. The song snatched them all back to reality. After a tearful round of hugs and explianing to my grandchildren why mom was crying so, it became a teachable moment for children who have never wanted for anything. My hat goes off to all those that have been touched by the meaning behind this song. My daughter did not know how much this song meant to me either, until tonight, that is. God bless you all.
