54 years. I am left handed. I tried 3 different times in my life to have guitar lessons, all were right hand teachers who wanted me to play right handed. Throw in a neurological issue, and it made it impossible for me. I couldn't do it. I was forced to accept that I would never play in this lifetime. Until you. Until this. I not only had a neurological learning issue, but since had an ear/brain tumor, I am now deaf in the right ear, and I had a stroke 2 days after that surgery. I actually tuned my guitar, played the one finger notes, and played the scale to sound beautiful on my guitar. (I have had my guitar for over 10 years and NEVER played her before. Thank You so much for this. This moment was cry worthy for me. Pure Joy!!

Very cool. I learned of DADGAD due to a fav band, Del Amitri. Several of their songs are DADGAD w or w.o. capo. It feels a bit like cheating, but it is also rewarding to be able to play some nice chords with 2 or 3 strings. Cheers.

Great introduction to this new (to me) tuning. Your presentation was very straight forward, interesting, and informative. (you knew that already) But, reiterating from my perspective to say I'm looking forward to taking my life long living in "intermediate guitar playing" will now proceed into something better! As a professional photographer, I have no desire to make a dime from playing guitar. However, I am wanting to at least get to a level that when I play people stop and want to listen to me play. This challenge has been with me for awhile and I want to move on! Thanks, Tony!

Hey Tony, I've heard you play many times, and you're ridiculously talented, so thanks so much for tutorials like this where you recognize that most of us lesser mortals need clear concise teaching. It would be so very easy for a talented guitarist like yourself to come across as condescending and to use these videos simply to showcase your talent. Thankfully you never do this. You've got the perfect combination of musical skill and the ability and willingness to teach . I've seen far too many so-called guitar teachers who simply just want to show off. Mind you, I could listen to you play all day long. Be great if you could develop this DADGAD tutorial in other lessons. This was great. Thanks 👍

@@paulaxiz ya I agree. Like any harmonica tutorial will say " I've watched this video for 6 hours and I don't own a harmonica" or something to that effect. People just lost in a dopamine driven social validation feedback loop. All social media is the same. It's crazy what ppl will do, say or make up to get digital attention.

Talking about modal tunings: What I like to do is tune my guitar to Open D Modal, low to high: ADADAD. You'll need special strings because of the low A string (I'm using a 7-string set without the G-string), but it's an awesome tuning - easy chords, major and minor scales are possible etc. I'm especially using this tuning for medieval pieces and also for folk and oriental music: I'm playing the melody on the high D string and I'm using the lower strings as drone strings. If you got the time, give it a try - it's worth it! ;)

Thanks for a good introduction to DADGAD. The strums with single scale notes should keep beginners busy playing stuff that sounds pretty. I'd like to recommend 2 pieces in DADGAD for acoustic guitar fans and advanced players: Laurence Juber's The Jig Is Up, and Pierre Bensusan's Nice Feeling. Apologies to fans of other fine guitarists and singers who use DADGAD, like Clive Carroll and John Smith.

Hi Tony, a couple of corrections. Your G chord is not a suspended chord because you do include the B, which is the major 3rd. Your chord example is actually a G (add 9). Your "A7" chord is not a dominate 7th chord at all. It is actually a G6 (sus 2) chord. You were almost on the right track by calling it a suspended chord, but you see, with a dominate 7th chord you have to have the major 3rd (in this case the C#) to bring out the dominate sound and function of the chord. Otherwise, nice lesson!

Can I ask sir, isn't bad if we used the standard tuning chords in DADGAD tuning? I just wondering if it is have a cool or disgusting sound.
@petromoderne
@petromoderne 5 ай бұрын
I can reply to that. I play mostly in Dadgad. The middle strings are the same as standard, so you can use similar chords. Other chords can work, like the typical d chord Its ideal for fooling around and noodling. Personally I think its a mistake to try to convert all the standard chords into dadgad. You can play a lot of things just implying chords with two notes. Just have fun!

First time trying an alternate tuning. High E and B strings seems too loose. Should I be using different gauge strings?
@tacguitar
@tacguitar 5 жыл бұрын
Those higher strings will feel a bit slack, you can certainly go with a slightly higher gauge string and that will help the tension :-)
@juanpabloporraslara5318
@juanpabloporraslara5318 3 жыл бұрын
Definitelly,! For those tunings that You have to loose down the string note; You have to use Hard tensión strings! Otherwise your medium or light tensión strings are gonna sound sloppy and also You can get a Buzz sound in the looser string! Listen an advice about changing tunings: the changing of tunings can bend ir damage the fretboard and the guitar bb itself because of the tensión of the strings! My first guitar i damage the body and neck ir fretboard to the point that start making buzzing sounds and since the fretboard was bend so much that the strings height was to high and i had to sand down a milímeter or 2 the bone at the bridge of the Guitar to lower the height of the strings. And still buzzing 2 strings and i put a little bit of Paper Under the strings in the neck part of the Guitar and still buzzing! So i put a little thinner piece of a business card Under the strings at the bridge of the Guitar between the bone that i sanded down and the strings and i finally fixed the problem! That Guitar i have it in Open D tuning. And D i want to change to Open E tuning i just put a CAPO in the second fret. It's better for those guitar players that use different tunings to have a Guitar set up in just one running! It's a little bit of an investment but it's better than damage your only guitar and sometimes it can get so damage that it won't work anymore and it could be garbage! I have 12 guitars
@juanpabloporraslara5318
@juanpabloporraslara5318 3 жыл бұрын
I have 12 guitars each one on a different tuning. Standard tuning, Drop D tuning , Eb tuning, Open G tuning, Open D tuning, Drop C tuning, Drop C# tuning, Open F tuning, D-A-D-G-A-D or Celtic Tuning, D tuning, G Hybrid tuning, and other one for any other tuning that i want to use. I have 3 acoustic guitars and 9 classic guitars . I tell you that i like more classic guitars than anything else because i can play all kinda of music mostly rock, Grunge, heavy metal and flamenco and Classic music and the nylon strings Hard tensión are gently in My finger tips than the metal strings in the acoustic guitars! Also i like more the body and wood materials in My classic guitars and the space between the strings are more separated than the acoustic guitar strings. So it's easy for me to play and change chords! Actually because i'm more use to it because i'm sure that if i practice more in the acoustic guitars i Will feel confortable enough like i feel with the classic guitars. I'm in love of guitars! To the point that i sleep with 7 of My y guitars in My Bed and My cat.
