There is actually a way to change the gain in the H4e: Rec settings > Rec source > Pre mixer or Post mixer. That chooses wether the signal is recorded before the mixer (the faders don't affect the recorded levels) or after the mixer (the faders in fact affect the recorded level). I haven't had the time to test the thing extensively yet, but this was one of the first functions I made sure it has.

I did check the manual and you are correct. I haven’t tried it yet but will. Thanks.

@@Dan_Finnegan The sound levels produced by a band are probably high enough that increasing recording levels is not necessary, which means that pre-mixer is very much ok. When using 32 bit float in recording, the only source of distortion are the microphones, or other gear in the signal chain (if any). The dynamic range of 32 bit float is more than 10 times higher than that of 24 bit, which is why there is no real reason to adjust the recording levels. Just remember to adjust them below 0 db before saving to 24 bit.

So if u select pre mixer - adjusting the audio manually will adjust the sound recorded?

Thought you might like this one. I’m going to do a comparison this week on recording with the low volume with the H5 and compare the two.

Thanks, are the xy capsules on top of the H4 essential removable?

They are not interchangeable on the H4e.

hi, if using for example the MKE 600 as an overhead: is the -40+40 value on the mixer dB or just "values" because if I record with a mic in the camera, I should level the incoming signal (voice) about -12dB on the h4essential I get a clear sound about Value 14-16 . no noisy background...

I have a question on the XLR inputs and was wondering if there is a way to set the input gain for those? We are using this to record our band straight from the mix using XLR Left / Right from the mains - but if we turn the volume up on the overall mix, the recording level on the H4e goes up - would like to be able to adjust the input gain if possible.

You can set your volume levels via the mixer. I’ll post video for next week on it.

thank you for this video! I only own an old Tascam Dr40, I was thinking to upgrade with this one to use it with my Rode NGT4+, do you think it's worth it? I would use the system for documentary filmmaking

I love mine. So lightweight and so easy to use. Set it on USB interface and it plugs in to iPhone then into iPad without reconfiguration. I mainly use it for voice on my videos.

Without gain Can this be turned up to record louder during a live stream without editing later?

That's one of the tricks that I've been thinking of, is because quiet sounds are very quiet on a 32-bit float file, so you'd need to boost it in some way to actually hear it. You'd need to add a compressor on the output, likely, because the signal would be so quiet. My question is is this practical for most live mixers to be able to handle, or is it something that they would not be able to do for some reason.
