R Eli's explanation of Afriza about the length of the wall is R' Tam, and Rashi indeed says it is the height. Saying the argument is over height seems to be the logical way to read the sign, in that the point seems to be that he wants beams to connect from one wall to the other at said height. Who says that he wants the whole length of the other wall? Maybe he only wants to connect the beams on one part of it. Yet we know the argument is over the length of the wall. So there's a lot of back and forth about it in Rishonim, and apparently now in MDY. The Marharsha agrees with R Tam's explanation that the argument must be over height and width, and both bend to the other in an instance of each.
