Intro to Epidemiology Study Types

Directionality and timing looks the same to me, if you conduct a study when you have exposure but still don't have an outcome then it will be forward or prospective and if you conduct the study at a point where the outcome have developed then it would be a backward or retrospective study. Is there a difference between the two?

I don't understand the difference between the directionality and the timing of the study. In both retrospective and backward direction we start with the outcome as known and we look back in time to see what the exposure was....so what is the difference?

+Manu Suissa In directionality, its exposure and outcome, in pros/retrospective its to do with the outcome and when your doing your study. A forward directionality means that you start with some exposure and then see what the outcome is, but this can still be retrospective. For example, if you looked at 1900's population data, and saw that during the industrial revolution there were more factory workers exposed to dangerous gases, then you could follow up to the 1950's and see which of those factory workers got cancer. So you started with your exposure and followed up to see an outcome, but the whole thing is still retrospective because the outcomes happened before your study. If you did the same study at your local bakery and saw there were more bakers, and more bakers meant more exposure to flour, you could follow them up and see if they got more lung conditions, but because the outcome this time is after your study its prospective
