Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Mandir in PUNE
The Dagdusheth Halwai Ganapati Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to the elephant god Ganesha located in Pune, Maharashtra, India. It is one of the most revered places of worship in India and is visited by over a hundred thousand pilgrims every year. Devotees of the temple include celebrities and Chief Ministers of Maharashtra who visit during the annual ten-day Ganeshotsav festival, the birthday of Ganesha. The main Ganesh idol is insured for a sum of ₹10 million (US$130,000).
The temple was founded in 1893 by Dagadusheth Halwai, a sweetmeat seller who became a wealthy businessman. Halwai had lost his son the previous year, and at the request of his guru created murtis (images of a deity) of Ganesha and Dattatreya. He later established the Halwai Ganapati Trust. Bal Gangadhar Tilak, during the British Raj, gave a public form to the Ganeshotsavfestival celebrations as a way of getting around an order that barred public meetings.
