Dagger Necromancer vs Hell Ancients

I've been quite disappointed lately with my inability to catch a single encounter with Diablo Clone, so I've decided to pick the next thing down. Diablo, Baal and Mephisto are painful, but I find them to be easier to manage than having to deal with the three barbarians in one round.
This was an untested build for me, and I expected fully to have to quit because a poison necro is always regarded as a bad idea without enigmashakomararach. And yes, although he is a Dagger Necromancer, he's also a Novamancer when it's too dangerous to tangle in melee.

Thanks for the compliment, I've taken some pride in not having a perfect setup and figuring out how to be effective with stuff that a person can get without a lot of difficulty. Having friends faceroll their perfect paladins really turned me off having trying to make my chars perfect. And my apologies for not going all poison. I could look into playing a straight(er) Novamancer sometime, but I think I'd need to overdo the +skills.

I salute you for the unusual build my friend. It's always a pleasure seeing someone use one of these. I find it very amusing how many facerolls disliked this vid. I roll with a skellymancer myself but I might just try a poison dagger necro for once.

the struggle is real. The daggermancer suffers from low attack speed which mitigates the advantage of having crushing blow

Crushing blow does not sit well with poison dagger, as you only need to hit every 15-20 seconds.

Great vid! I've been playing since day one and still have some characters.... mostly godly now, but this vid reminds me of how fun it really can be. When you think you could die at any time... Love the old drop-find gear views. Thanks for this. The most damage I've seen in game was from one poison dagger necro I made, now lost to expiration I think. His 'Poison Explosion' rang in around51k damage eventually? Something crazy like that. The poison tree skills were somewhere around 41 or 42 lol. I made a 'Fury' fanged knife once, but that really didn't cut it. It was the 'Blackbog's Sharp' cinquedeas that eventually won the highest damage award. Had some rare +skills skull offhand that was just bonkers, too. It was more than spirit and homo in terms of damage I recall. It was fun. That's what I like to do... build weird builds and throw the perfs on them. Try a suriken assasin with eth perf grief zerk, perf phoenix monarch, whistand's guard hat, gobble toe myrmydon greves,... and get this for gloves: Cleglaw's. :D

I had seen posts that he was non-viable. Sure, he's not as effective as skellymancer or a hammerdin, but I wanted to see if I could walk one without trading heavily because it's Hell trying to trade in public and I have no interest in D2JSP. It would have been a lot of fun to deck him out with all the top gear and an inventory full of skill charms, but do that too soon, it really shows how grindy the game is. I've tried a few Blade Fury assassins, I've just never walked one to the end of Hell. They're viable, but I have to keep my selections to three characters or I'll still be trying to get them past Hell Baal after Ladder resets.

Ya, when I saw the gear I was very skeptical at first. I still can't figure out how you managed to pull through because for me, I have a gut-feeling that if I tried that, I'd just fail miserably.

Nice video! Thank you for your work. I don't get why there are so many dislikes. Just because you don't kill the ancients in ten seconds with a javazon, does not mean that it's not enjoyable. The build is unique and therefore interesting.

Thanks. There hasn't been much feedback about why they've disliked it, so I have to just keep guessing. I wanted to see if I could get this build past Hell Baal, and although I stopped after the Ancients I did it without resorting to hard-to-get gear and runewords. It's become a staple of what I've been doing for the past few years, partly because I remember what it was like uninstalling the game upon entering Hell difficulty and partly because there aren't many people who will show you how to do it without an "ultimate max damage" build.

I solo a lot, but I'm still trying to get some builds past Hell Baal. I've played on USEast most of the time, but when the ladder resets, I could move to another server for a season.

Try running a poisonbarb, inventory full of small +100 poisondamage runes. Thats +3200Poisondamage, or 3000 if you want to keep the portalbook. Or you can find a wand with portal on it.

I don't know what Blizzard did with the AI, but I've found the hireling to be even worse. The golem seems to be more intelligent than the hireling. The hireling's aura is still useful, however.

Change your mercenary to holy freeze, put 20 points on lower resist, an please 1 to bone armor and the rest to bone wall. If you are going to do melee combat you need the bone armor.

I always maxed my mastery with my poison necros and got a point or 2 in revive so I could use like 8 or 9 night lords on them. Unless I was helping someone else later, than I would use cows.

One thing I like about necromancers is that there's plenty of flexibility. That strategy is quite viable, but this was the first poison necro I've turned into a Patriarch, so I thought I'd just stick with the poison skills, curses and a gumby. If I can still keep motivated, I hope to try a variant sometime.

Modighen I haven't played much since 1.11 do you know if they ever did anything about bone spear missing like 95% of the time in hell? I created one once in 1.11 (after I found a +3 spear, +3 spirit wand) and he was awesome but once I got to Nm he missed about 75% of the time and it just wasn't fun. But I kept going until hell where I could shoot 5 times at a pack of a dozen or so and not hit a single one. I did love killing bosses with him though. Bone Spirit with a +6 wand just eats bosses.

When I'm looking for a +3 warcried throwing knife, I can spend all week looking at the vendors and never find one. I know it's a pretty flimsy excuse, but there were so many "cheap" builds I wanted to try out and the bone necro didn't have as much appeal as others.

I know the Daggermancer isn't a common build, but what's the point in showing how to defeat the Ancients in a botsuit? The game is actually quite boring when your character is made from an item site shopping list.
